Bangalore : Royal Enfield Launches Thunderbird 500

Daijiworld Media Network

Bangalore, Oct 25 (Business Standard): Royal Enfield, India's oldest maker of motorcycles, is looking at doubling its sales at 150,000 units during the next year (2013) as against 75,000 units sold in 2011. For the year 2012, the company is aiming at selling 100,000 bikes.

In order to meet the growing demand for its high performance motorcycles, the company is setting up second manufacturing unit at Oragadam near Chennai at an investment of Rs 150 crore. It has bought 50 acres land for the purpose. The plant will commence production during the first quarter of 2013, Shaji Koshy, senior vice president, sales and marketing, Royal Enfield said.

“Last year we sold 75,000 units, whereas we have achieved that mark in the first three quarters of this year. Our monthly sales volume has increased to 10,000 units from 7,000 units in January this year. With the launch of Thunderbird 500 we hope to double our sales in 2013,” he said.

Talking to reporters after the launch of Thunderbird 500 and all-new Thunderbird 350 in Bangalore on Thursday, Koshy said the company would have a combined manufacturing capacity of 150,000 units in 2013. The company has also increased its dealer network in the country to 237 outlets. The company will start delivering the newly launched bike from end of November and the customers, who have booked Thunderbird 350 would be given a choice to shift to Thunderbird 500 before commencing the booking for new customers, he added.

The company plans to export about 5 per cent of its total capacity next year. It currently exports its bikes to USA, UK, Canada, and Latin America among other markets.

Thunderbird 500 is available for Rs 186,622 (On-road, Bangalore) and Thunderbird 350 comes with a price of Rs 146,466 (On-road, Bangalore).

Although this is a long due change and upgradation of the Thunderbird, I read the reviews at www.Zigwheels.com especially concerning the scooped up rider seat, which is a set back for the rider on long runs causing pain in the tail bone, given the 20 litres fuel tank range which is supposed to take us around 500 kms. without refuelling.
I hope Enfield looks into this matter and provide other options for the rider alongwithth the split seat that is useful for carrying additional luggage on long rides.
I hope the upcoming RE plant will remove the longwaiting list to acquire this classic bike, inspite of its age old technical set backs.
Am happy I didnt buy the 35o cc model last year.

Is it good to see additional thousands of thunderbirds (including other two wheelers) entering the overcrowded and congested roads?

We are already suffering with bitter experience, by facing miseries of daily sacrifices of valuable lives, on roads. Instead of finding a solution to the present crisis, how the vehicle producers are encouraged and comfortable to add the oil to the burning fire?

If we didn’t have the amazing and incredible telecommunication revolution, certainly it was not possible to deal and attend vast volume of transactions, manually. Electronic media is playing a wonderful role in today’s social, economic, financial, science, medical and technical (and several other) sectors.

As per the level of present population, the priority is to have an adequate, comfortable, cheap and safe transport facility. Therefore, it is essential to increase the public transport vehicles, by considerably reducing the two wheelers and individual vehicles, on limited roads.

In the meantime, why can’t we support and implement a new concept in vehicles, which can give the option to save expensive fuel and have a pollution free environment?
Why can’t we have a revolutionary change in our land transport sector, by including merits of rabbit style (fast, safe and free) instead of mere tortoise style (slow and steady wins the race)?
As per new concept a medium (or heavy) vehicle can be produced, with same cost of a thunderbird, by saving 50% fuel and with pollution free option.

If they had reduced their "long waiting period", they could have doubled their sales ages back. But now many other models have entered the market with more variety. The competition is tough now.

Thunderbird 350cc is a not a popular model compared to its other models. Long waiting period for 500cc(18 months?) and only available from couple of dealers in Karnataka shows they need improvement in several areas. But nothing can take away class of Bullet.

It's easy to get a 'perfect match'for an arranged marriage in M'lore(mind you -it's next to impossible nowadays) but it's impossible to get an 'Enfield'bike of any make within a 'reasonable'time in M'lore! Statutory waiting period-At least 1 year! And this from 'reliable' sources and 'customers' themselves!
