Karnad Slams Naipaul for his Views on Muslims, says No Apology

Mumbai, Nov 4 (PTI): Noted playwright Girish Karnad delivered a stinging attack on V S Naipaul for his views on Muslims in India, calling the Nobel Laureate "stone deaf" and an "unreliable" writer of non-fiction as far as this country is concerned.

Karnad, who criticised Naipaul yesterday during a session on theatre at the "Literature Live!" literature festival here, today stood by his remarks and ruled out any apology to the India-born writer.

"I completely stand by my statement. I haven't made any mistake, rather I came prepared for it," Karnad said, as his remarks shocked the organisers of the Festival.
"Naipaul has no idea of how Muslims contributed to Indian history," Karnad said in his address during which he also attacked Naipaul for his reported visit to BJP office after Babri mosque demolition in December 1992.

Dwelling on Naipaul's anti-Islam stance in his writing, Karnad said, "Given that music defines our daily existence... you find it in the streets, in the restaurants and so on... you would expect an exploration of India to comment on that.

Now Mr Naipaul has written three books on India. If you read them, you find that not even one of them contains any reference to music. He has gone through the whole of India without responding to Indian music. I think that only means that he is tone deaf."

Naipaul, who was given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the festival, was not present when Karnad made the remarks before a small audience which included actor Naseeruddin Shah.

Karnad also questioned the decision of the Festival organisers to honour Naipaul with the award.

Calling Naipaul an unreliable writer of non-fiction as far as India is concerned, he said, "He really doesn’t pay much attention to the details of the texts he studies."

Reacting to Karnad's remarks, festival director Anil Dharker said, "We were all taken aback by Girish Karnad's attack on V S Naipaul. After all, we had invited him (Karnad) to speak about his journey in theatre...

"I am all for free speech but free speech presupposes a dialogue, not a diatribe. Karnad's two objections to Naipaul getting the award are demonstrably false," Dharker said in a statement.

Proud of you Mr. Karnad. It feels great that even today there are people who have the courage to speak up the truth. Its high time the world today knows what has been happening and how everyone is just trying to please the political bigwigs. Regarding the carnage in Gujarat, the world knows it and yet nothing is done about it. Good job Mr Karnad. You are a True Indian and more so a wonderful human being,to speak your truth so clearly and so bravely.

What Mr. Karnad said was his unbiased liberal view for the good of future India, not anyone else’s? Naipaul has said so many things against the Muslims – have the believer of Islam been there to defend themselves when he did?
Naipaul was born in Chaguanas, Trinidad and Tobago, to parents of Indian descent was ranked the 50 greatest British writers since 1945. He was not happy with his first marriage of 41 years with Pat who was a short of unofficial editor of all his works. Naipaul regularly visited prostitutes in London, and later had a long-term abusive affair with another married woman, Margaret Gooding.
Naipaul was anti-Muslim and has mentioned some negative aspects of Islam in his works, such as nihilism among fundamentalists. He has been quoted describing the bringing down of the Babri Mosque as a "creative passion," and the invasion of Babur in the 16th century as a "mortal wound”.
Even anti-Muslim cartoon, Salman Rushdie denounced Naipaul for supporting the RSS, VHP and BJP led Indian government on the anti-Muslim 2002 Gujarat riots: Rushdie said Naipaul was "a fellow traveller of fascism and he disgraces the Nobel award".
He expressed his view that women's writing was inferior to men's, and that there was no female writer whom he would consider his equal that attracted media controversy.
To conclude, Naipaul was a biased man with low moral value and his Muslim bashing statements did bring him laurels but that had hurt the sentiments of the believer of second largest religion on this earth. I fully agree with Mr. Karnad. Jai Hind!

    Hey Karnad,
You must realise that Naipul has as much freedom of speech as you to speak. It is shame on you that you used the forum to vent your own frustration. I dont think Naipul lobbied to get Nobel prize like you lobbied to get your Jnanapith award and it is no secret. So what moral right do you have to critisize Naipul. It reflects nothing but jealousy on your part.
