Another Textbook Row: 'Non-vegetarians Lie, Cheat and Commit Sex Crimes'

New Delhi, Nov 16 (PTI): Yet another textbook in a CBSE school has sparked a controversy by allegedly insinuating that non-vegetarians lie, cheat and commit crimes, with the government terming it as "unfortunate" and asking state bodies to remain alert about such content and monitor them.

"Sensitivities of communities have to be kept in mind. I think its unfortunate, an occasional aberration happens. But what I would request is that the state body should always be on alert just like how NCERT is on alert and monitor the content... that is what we can advocate from this ministry," HRD minister MM Pallam Raju told reporters while replying to queries on the class VI textbook.

CBSE on the other hand said they prescribe textbook only from class IX onwards and it is the school which decides on which books to prescribe for students in other classes.

The minister's reaction came after media reports highlighted the content of the textbook of a CBSE school.

The book titled New Healthway: Health, Hygiene, Physiology, Safety, Sex Education, Games and Exercises reportedly said that non-vegetarians "easily cheat, tell lies, they forget promises, they are dishonest and tell bad words, steal, fight and turn to violence and commit sex crimes."

The development came close on the heels of the ministry asking NCERT to present a report about some "objectionable" references in a CBSE textbook about Nadar community in Tamil Nadu.

State chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday demanded removal of "objectionable" references in a letter to the Prime Minister.

Ministry officials, however, said that Raju, who had earlier received representations in this regard, has already asked NCERT for a report soon.

The NCERT textbook committee is currently examining the issue.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the chief minister said the "incorrect" details in the textbook of class IX were "very misleading and may leave a wrong impression in the minds of the students" about the community.

"The Nadars are said to be descendants of those who ruled the Cheran, Cholan and Pandyan Kingdoms... the Nadar Community is not a lower caste as mentioned in the CBSE book. Rather, they have been rulers of South India at one point of time", the chief minister said.

    God loves only vegetarians ! I would advise people of such mentality to visit Jeevdani Temple at Virar (Mumbai) where hundreds of sheeps are taken for sacrifice with garland, and kumkum on their head. Is this God/Goddess is vegetarian or non-vegetarian ? Mentality unstable writer of the book should be taken to this place.

    India is one of the poorest countries in the world. The poverty in India isn't just psychological poverty. The poverty in India isn't just emotional poverty. The poverty in India isn't just social poverty. The poverty in India isn't just religious and cultural poverty. The poverty in India is an absolute poverty. The poverty in India involves poverty in every aspect of life. The Multidimensional Poverty Index developed by Oxford University (which will appear in the upcoming UNDP human development report) shows that India is far poorer than Africa not just in number but also in intensity. The new poverty measure shows that 8 states out of the 29 states in India have more poor people than 26 poorest African countries combined.
    India's population growth rate is increasing by the day putting pressure on the limited resources. India is very poor in terms of education, in terms of economic improvement, infrastructure, health care, etc. High illiteracy rates continue to tear India into pieces. Majority of females in India today cannot even read and write.
    Although India has built up large amounts of foreign currency reserves, the current account deficit has deteriorated in recent months. This deterioration is a result of the overheating of the economy. Aggregate Supply cannot meet Aggregate demand so consumers are sucking in imports. Excluding workers’ remittances, India’s current account deficit is approaching 5% of GDP. Racism and inequality continue to destroy India and the rich get richer while the poor get poorer. India has one of the largest budget deficits in the developing world.
    Please highlight these issues in the school/college books in simple terms. Do not unnecessary feed politically toned baseless issues to the young mind.

    This issue is a good Topic for medical research.Some reliable medical research institute must conduct a study on this topic with the cooperation of eminent professors in Medicine/ Psychiatry.May be there is some truth in those comments by the author of the books.Instead of getting upset with the author or the administration,it is better to investigate.

    This is an important social issue and can be approached from various angles. I would like to resort to "history" because the conclusion in CHAND publishers concerned book can not be verified / denied in a physics laboratory - like determining the acceleration due to gravity by using a simple pendulum. Or in chemistry laboratory - like determining the normality of a base using acid-base titration.

    1) World wars of 20th century were between non-veg people on both sides. 2) Many past and recent terrorists and criminals were / are non-veg people - as per information from many newspapers and media. In view of these historical points, the concerned conclusion needs a thorough discussion.

    To some extent may be it is true that non-vegetarians "easily cheat, tell lies, they forget promises, they are dishonest and tell bad words, steal, fight and turn to violence and commit sex crimes." But it doesn’t mean that vegetarians are honest, don’t steal, lie or forget and fight. We have many examples of pure vegetarians turned violent.

    I think the article meant for HUMOUR section of some magazine erroneously printed in CBSE Text Book. If eating Non-vegetarian induces a person to lie, cheat and commit crimes then you hardly find any vegetarian in India.

    Even after 65 years of Independence, the citizens of India are not free to choose what they should eat and what they should not. There are issues and topics of greater concern which need immediate attention and to be included in the text books to make India the Super power. But here is a person generalizing every violence, cheating, sex crime etc are due to eating non-veg. What do we want our younger generation to be? where are we leading them? Are we really concerned of values that uphold the dignity of human beings irrespective of cast, creed, religion, culture, profession and food habits? OR are we trying to destroy our Mother India which is so beautiful and rich? let's offer greater things to our children and make India the super power and rich in non-violence, truth, justice,love, affection, peace and forgiveness through value based and integrated education system.

    I am not surprised of something unusual and unexpected issues happening in India. What never happens around the world it happens only in India - like the Non-Veg. comment, like urinating on roadside, like spitting, like open natures call, breaking traffic rules, scams, cheats, frauds, non payment of taxes by Veg and Non Veg and so on. India should be proud of many issues which are unethical and uncultured. Though we talk high about our ancient culture, we say that we are the next super power, if the Govt looks at its own backyard, we have the worst infrastructure, worst traffic rules, worst buildings with full of violations, division of this country into Caste, creed, religion and many more. Though I am a Non-Veg by the comments in the Text book, I do not feel ashamed but would like to say that whoever has written the said line must be either an idiot, an eccentric and a mentally unstable human on this earth. We feel proud to talk of our age old civilisation but our today's people really civilised. Time to retrospect.

    Any such generalization is utter nonsense. Do they have the research to back this. The whole world baring maybe 3% is non vegetarian. Does it mean the whole world is bad. There are other strong reasons why they could promote "Being Vegetarian". 1) 1 kg of animal meat needs 25 kgs of feed which means so much of land and water resources could have been used for directly for growing human foodgrains. 2)The other reason why in the West "being vegetarian" is being promoted is due to statistical evidence that those people have lesser health problems.

    One name that comes to mind almost immediately is the former spokesperson of the Congress party. A renowned name in the world of politics and a member of the parliament, from Rajasthan.

    He told lies, cheated & committed sex crimes with a senior female lawyer (allegedly to his wife)and apparently, he is a vegetarian. LMFAO. Take that, CBSE!!

    Astonishing to hear that the God is liking only vegetarians.

    What is the necessity and importance to God whether a person is vegetarian or non-vegetarian.

    God loves only the pure heart from humans. God has created all things for humans to utilize and enjoy because God doesn't want any sheep, lamb, ram, cow.chicken, pork or any creeping things because God never eat anything.

    Nithyanda Swamy is the best vegetarian cheater to his devotees.

    I think the text books were edited later un-noticeably by some fenatics after the approval.
