Mangalore, Dec 17: The department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Father Muller Medical College organized a Continuing Medical Education (CME) on ‘Critical Care in Obstetrics’ in the Decennial Memorial Hall, FMMC here on Sunday December 16.
Dr M Rukmini, reproductive and child health officer, Dakshina Kannada, inaugurated the program and said that identifying seriousness of illness and immediate treatment is utmost important. In case of maternal death, she insisted on the importance of carrying out post mortem and persisted that the private hospitals should report maternal death details in a prescribed format. She stated that such maternal deaths are less in the DK district when compared to other districts.
Dr V Rajsekaran Nair, professor and HOD, SUT Hospital, Trivandrum, the guest of honour on the occasion said that medicos should uphold the glory of profession as medical error is the fifth leading cause for death in the United States. He said that delay in hospitals to initiate treatment also contributed a lot towards deaths.
Dr Somashekaraiah, secretary of Karnataka Medical Council, addressing the gathering, drew attention of the student audience by saying that many medical course graduates do not get registered with the Karnataka Medical Council after completion of their course. “This surfaces many problems to them in the future”, he said and added that gynaecologists have very much need of being registered with the medical council.
Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director, FMCI presiding over the programme, said that considerable advancement in health sector has maximized the survival prospects of mother and foetus in case of critical care.
Fr Denis D’Sa, administrator, FMMC, Dr Jayaprakash Alva, Dean, FMMC and Dr B Sanjeev Rai were present.
