Double Murder at Sullia Shocks Town - Suspect Absconding

Sullia, Dec 31: Murky details have emerged in connection with the double murder of a man and a woman that shocked the town on Sunday December 30 at Jayanagar here.
As reported earlier, Padmavati (38), wife of Harish Nayak of Naraje, and tractor driver Hitesh (30) from Kushalnagar were found murdered on the morning of Sunday.
It is said that a man identified as Vasanth Sherigar used to visit their freqently, and on the night of the murder, stayed overnight. He disappeared in the morning, and his mobile phone was switched off.
Harish and Padmavati were married for 15 years, and blessed with two sons. Elder son Ravishankar is in the 7th standard while the younger one Mahesh is in 4th standard.
The couple were in the process of building a new house near their existing house, and work on levelling the land was going on. A JCB earthmover had been brought for the purpose and on Saturday night the work began. After the work, tractor driver Hitesh, workers Basavaraj and Lingappa slept at Harish's house. Vasanth who shared a cordial relationship with the family also arrived and stayed there overnight, it is said.
Harish is engaged in preparing mid-day meals for students at an educational institution. He used to leave for work at 6 am and come back at 10 pm. On the day of the murder, the two sons slept with their mother inside the house while the men slept outside. On Sunday morning Padmavati was nowhere to be seen, and after an intense search, her body was found along with that of Hitesh at some distance from the house. The bodies were found in a mangled state.
Morever, the couple's elder son said that Hitesh had come inside the house where Padmavati was sleeping. He woke her up and both of them left the house, while the son went back to sleep.
The needle of suspicion is pointing at Vasanth, a coolie worker and a married man whose house was undergoing repair works. He was a frequent visitor at Harish's house over the past two years, and his sudden disappearance after the crime has raised suspicions. His mobile phone is switched off.
Hitesh who was murdered had got married to a girl from Gundya on June 8 in Madikeri. He had studied till second PUC and then worked in various places including Periyapatna. He had recently joined work as tractor driver in Sullia.
Sullia circle inspector Sudarshan and other policemen arrived at the spot and investigations are on.
