Mangalore: Mayor inaugurates cancer education cell at MIO

Mangalore, Feb 4: On the eve of the World Cancer day, Mayor Gulzar Banu inaugurated the Cancer education cell in Mangalore Institute of Oncology, a state of the art super specialty Cancer hospital.

In his welcome address, Dr Suresh Rao, the director of the institute said that the inauguration of a cancer education cell is in accordance to this year’s theme “Cancer - Did you know?” and also that with this cell as the nodal centre, the hospital will attempt to dispel damaging myths and misconceptions about cancer through cancer education, awareness programs by organizing tobacco cessation programs to help smokers and chewers quit from the habit.

Dr Rao also said that since November 2011, the institute has treated nearly 1,000 patients with the state of the art Rapid arc radiation facility. The centre also inaugurated the most advanced colposcopy facility that will help doctors detect premalignant and malignant lesions in the cervix, vagina and vulva very precisely.

 He stated that very soon the centre will be installing the stereotactic mammogram and PET-CT facility, instruments that will help in early cancer detection, precise location and spread.

Director Dr Jalauddin Akbar introduced the mayor and appreciated her service to the city of Manglore during her tenure. Banu in her speech emphasized the need for cancer education and awareness to the community.

Dr Sanath Hegde thanked the Mayor for her valuable support for the cancer cause. The program was compered by Kavitha.
