2002 riots were unfortunate, Modi tells EU envoys

New Delhi, Feb 8 (PTI): European Union, which has ended over a decade-old boycott of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, has been told by him that the 2002 riots in the state were unfortunate.

Modi took the unusual step of driving to Germany embassy here to a luncheon meeting with envoys and representatives of several European Union member countries that was hosted by German Ambassador Michael Steiner. The meeting remained undisclosed for one month till EU Ambassador Joao Cravinho went public yesterday.

Steiner told reporters today that he had always maintained that Germany had no intention of interfering in Gujarat Assembly elections and that it will take a "fresh look" after the election results.

"That is exactly what we were doing and part of it is to talk directly to Chief Minister Modi. India is a democracy. We respect democratic institutions. We respect election results in India and we have full trust in its judicial system. Because of this respect and trust, we are now in a new phase," the German Ambassador said.

However, he refused to give further details of the meeting but other sources in the know said, during the January 7 meeting with EU delegation, Modi said he will abide by the judicial verdict and that these events were unfortunate.

Modi is also understood to have said that everything should be done to avoid such events.

Asked if the EU, which has boycotted Modi for over 10 years after the riots, was softening up, Cravinho said, "The accountability of what happened in 2002, I think is the matter that is of interest to Indians and is of interest for people around the world."

He said that in India, there is a certain amount of emotion attached to what happened in 2002. "And it is a matter that we will follow with great interest...," he said.

Referring to last year's verdict by a Gujarat court convicting BJP legislator Maya Kodnani and Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi along with 30 others for their role in the Naroda Patia riots, the Ambassador said, Indian justice might be slow but delivers.

"Some months ago, there was end of one part of judicial process which shows that justice in India may be slow but it produces results. And that has helped to look towards closure of what everybody agrees is very very terrible set of events," he told a select group of journalists.

According to the sources, EU countries feel this is the right time to engage with Modi, who has been elected third time and has no judicial verdict against him. There is also a feeling among these countries that he is a player at the national level.

Last October, Britain, a member of the EU, had ended its decade-long boycott of Gujarat when its High Commissioner to India James Bevan met Modi to mark a "cordial beginning" to fresh ties, with the two discussing opportunities for greater economic cooperation.

In the first engagement with Gujarat in 10 years after it snapped all ties with the state in the aftermath of the 2002 communal riots, the British High Commissioner met Modi for about 50 minutes, discussing a range of issues, including climate change and investments.

Dear KR Prabhu and Suraj. I have to say that your political memory is VERY VERY POOR. Hundreds of kar sevaks were burnt OR 58 kar sevaks were burnt????????????????. This proves that both of you are rumour mongers. Yes the burning of Karsevaks is utterly wrong and unfortunate ( IN THE WORDS OF GREAT MODI ) Does the bloody gujrati criminals have the right to take the law in their hands and kill thousands of innocent people and rape thousands of innocent women ??????????. if the criminals are given such right and they are defended by the BJP govt then why do we need Constitution ?????????

Don't understand why people are comparing Modi to Hitler and all! probably people are not able to digest the success story of Gujarat. I am sure Gujarat people respect him well, which was evident in the recent election...

What happened in 2002 was a disaster and even Modi acknowledged it. yes it was unfortunate. But The riot was driven by a reason and the reason is well written by KRPrabhu, Kudla/Bangalore.

Hitler, Nero, Mussolini, Modi belong to the same tribe of hate-mongers and killers.
History will never forget their crime against humanity.
Looking at NeroNDRA Modi, Shakespear would have said again, "All the perfumes of Arabia will not make this little (blood-soaked) hand smell sweeter"
Westerners are befriending NeroNDRA Modi because they want to get his support to establish their business in Gujarat and India.

Dear readers..do not demean Indian justice system..If Modi is involved in riots..he will be prosecuted..if not why blame him..you cant call Rajiv Gandhi as responsible for Sikh riots...It is burning of Kar sevaks catapulted into bloody riots..though by no means any one can justify the killings..fact is for every riots there were triggers..

After 1947, how many riots have taken place throughout India. Why high light only Gujarat Riots? All most all the states of India, experienced horror of riots, thousands of people were killed and no body was bothered. People remembered only Gujarat riots. Very strange we don't realise that, Gujarat is most developed state in our country under the leadership of Mr. Modi.

    Dear
KRPrabhu, Kudla/Bangalore. Godra carnage was pre planned holocaust by the group who are a curse to mankind.

How can in a train, when more than 2000 kara sevaks who were travelling from Ayodhya, around 56 were burnt alive by pouring petrol in their train compartments at Godhra by a section of other community? Few straight forward question here :
    a) How come the fire done damage to only 2 bogies/compartment and not spread to other bogies/compartment and around 56 kar sevaks were burnt to death.
    b) What the rest of Kara sevaks were doing, while there was fire in those burnt compartment/bogies? Why no scar of burnt or damage to others bodes. Definitely few of the Kar sevaks will be awakened when this incident taking place and they would have immediately acted without wasting any time. Why this has not happened?

This leads to many doubts and gives conclusion that it is a pre planned holocaust. The real truth is hidden.

Truth will always prevail over lies and finally the truth wins.

Post Godhra riots were unfortunate, there is no second opinion. But why nobody is giving a thought to the fact thatwhy it happened, why Hindus were so angry and indulged in massive rioting?Reason is hundreds of karsevaks returning from Ayodhya were burnt alive by pouring petrol in their train compartments at Godhra station.Jafri and several muslim radicals have done the heinous crime. If such incidents happen even today riot may occur as a retaliatory measure. It was a mob voilence and unfortunately Modi was HM at that time. There is no riot in Gujarat since 2002 why?If we go on harping on such incidents, all political parties in India will render unfit to rule.India is most safe heaven for muslims/minorities in the world, one can not rule out this fact.

Hitler, Saddam Hussein, Pol Pot, , and Narindera Modi all have one thing in common - the blood of countless innocent individuals on their hands. In addition, they will be remembered in history for their injustices and violations of human rights. Narindera Modi and his radical BJP, along with its sister groups the RSS, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and the Bajrang Dal are part of the Sangh Parivars—groups which have a record of violating human rights. In 2002, for example, they uted a mass genocide campaign to suppress the Muslim population of Gujarat. Modi was the main organizer of this Genocide.

Mr Ismail where ever you are perinje or yanbu you are a BJP baiter. You cant see what happend in 1984 and howmany thousands of sikh have been butchered by your congress goons and the recent assam riots in which more then 4000 indians were murdered by your congress vote bank..the bangladeshi immigrants. Its really unfortunate that in gujrat 1000 plus poeple lost their lives but why the riot started ?If godhra wouldnt have happend then no more gujrat riots, again i am not justfying because our own Indians lost lives. Atleast the justice system is moving faster in Guj riots case but what about 1984 sikh riots?who has been convicted?the main cculprits are moving scot free.who has ben convicted for assam riots?people only know how to hate modi. People are employed to hate modi..thre is a particular lobby which hates modi is not happy about his growing popularity. Its only happend for the first time that people want someone to be Prime minister even befor the elections. Thts his spopularity. Do any one know that there are 100s of riots happend after akilesh took over as UP CM?and Is there any riots in gujrat after 2002?Thats called good governance. If u cant digest Modi popularity just dont poke ur nose in his affairs. Modi never said anythign against Muslims but you are dumb struck when a third rated Owaisi says he will decimate 100 crore hindus in 15minutes?where is all seculars?i do feel shame on these perverts.

By merely washing his hands or by saying that 2002 riots were unfortunate!!!, Mr.Modi tells EU envoys now because there is a hidden agenda......And that is at "Any Cost" he wants to show the "Country" and the "World" that he is the prime ministerial candidate for the coming 2014 Lokh Sabha Elections for BJP. Let me remind you that Gujarat is "only a part of India".
Mr. Modi Saab don't take Indians for granted!!!. The Gujarat riots episode is not over!!!. There a "Supreme Court" in this country still doing it's job impartially.
Mr. Advani Saab became a lame duck in BJP's prime ministerial candidate race in 2009 elections!!!.
And now your time has also not far away....Let's wait and watch...

There no end if we harp on the same issue again and again!
Indira Gandhi and Sikhs issue also an old matter!
Similar is the issue of Tipu Sultan's atrocities on Christians!
Some where we have to make a new beginning!
We can't live in the past for it had different reasons may be right or wrong!
Let us look forward for a new beginning!
