Bihar village bans jeans, T-shirt for girls

Patna, Feb 11 (IANS) : After three of its girls went missing, a village in Bihar's Siwan district has barred girls from using mobile phones and wearing jeans and T-shirts, an official said Monday.

The villagers also imposed heavy fines on girls if they violated the diktat.

The ban was imposed Sunday by self-styled social reformers of Makhnupur village under Pachrukhi police station in Siwan district, 150 km from here.

The decision was taken after three girls - including two cousins - went missing last week. They are yet to be traced.

"A group of villagers issued an order to impose a fine of Rs.10,000 if a girl is found anymore using a mobile phone or wearing jeans and a T-shirt outside her house," a local police official said.

An 11-member committee has been formed to implement the ban.

"Mobile phones, jeans and T-shirts are the cause of all evil in our society, including increasing love affairs and elopement," said Satyender Sharma, a villager.

In the last three months, nearly half a dozen village panchayats across the state have banned girls and women from using mobile phones and ordered them not to wear provocative clothes.

IT IS REALLY REQUIRED. FREEDOM FOR DRESS CODE, MEANS TAKING GRANT OF USING ANYTHING? THERE SHOULD BE A CURB ON USING DRESSES BY LADIES. NOWADAYS EXPOSING OF BODY BECOME A FASHION IGNORING THE SOCIETY DECORAM.

It depends upon how u think when see a woman body. I agree with Mr Sujith Nayak. And also the culture in one who born/adopted. Years back, I was in Gulf I had a couple of Pakistani friends who were working with me in an hospital. When we used to walk on the street together, hardly we used see girls on the street, In case if we find one,the way they look and the comments they deliver makes very weird even though they are educated. because it depends upon the culture they live. Now I live in US since 5 years. I traveled a lot in NY subway and various cities in New jersey. I seen girls or women are wearing different type of dresses. No one bothers what they wear in train or on the street or while shopping. Men generally ignore girls/women while they meet on the street/or subway Here in mangalore quite different. why Men, sometimes women too glance at each other during shopping/or on the streets Because it depends upon how you think about women.

This ban on jeans, T-shirt and using of cell phone is non sense. It will not help anybody in anyway. This is nothing but a politically motivated stunt.

Very good decision by villagers the same must be imposed all over INDIA, Definitely rape cases will decrease. Today’s dress style of girls and ladies is a major cause for majority of rape cases. What RSS top brass said is really correct miniskirts & all tight fit dresses must be banned then govt must impose death penalty for rapists.

    Robot,

Asking (those who imposed this restriction) to consider human body as a temple is too much - I wish they had thought that women/girls are too made of flesh, as men/boys are, which hurts both the gender equally. Just this much is enough to refrain from cause hurt (like rape) to the other person.

I have nothing against anybody wearing Jeans/T-Shirt - I simply asked them in their own language. Didn't intend to offend anybody.

Ms.Lydia Lobo, Kadri, If you don't mind, I wish to re-write to your suggestion by adding BOYS/MALES along with mobiles, jeans & T shirts should also be banned in their village.
The reason is simple- mobiles, jeans & T-shirts cannot tease, molest, kidnap, rape & (in some cases)kill the innocent girls & women.

First of all, each one of us has to remember - HUMAN BODY IS THE TEMPLE OF GOD - RESPECT IT

Well.. Well.. Did the girls run away with animals or humans ? I mean, boys ? In that case, shouldn't boys too be banned from carrying mobile and wearing pant/shirt and switch on to Dhothi-kurta ?

If I understand it correctly, it must be mutual attraction and both ran away willingly. Why punish only girls ?

    Mr. Shahanawaz,
Your suggestion is welcomed. But Why Burkha only for ladies? let men also start wearing Burkhas. Then the ladies will be more safer .The trouble mongers will not be able to differentiate a man and a woman - EQUALITY.

    For your curiosity,

For boys they may introduce new rules! If boys found missing from these villages they will come into conclusion that “ money is the main reason for all absconding, so all currency will be banned for reintroduction of old barter system and this rule breakers will be fined for Lagan of 10% grass or grain!!!!!!!!” or something like that. These Bihari babus are very typical, really strange! I don’t think anything serious in this act of villagers. Only for the news and not practicable.

Burqa is unwarranted, male controlled/imposed attire.
Nobody should dictate what a man or a woman should wear in their public life.
I prefer men and women should wear a modest dress.
Imposing a particular attire curtails freedom of humans.

Social reformers cannot press some one forcefully what to wear and what not. After all all religions says modesty in dressing. Dress which discribes the body cause to sin as the scripture says do not let others to sin too.

Do these states, villages belong to India? If yes, doesn't the constitution apply to them?

Why target girls for the criminal (shall we say animal) behavior of the society?

Issues are to be resolved, by going to the root cause, not by gagging women.

Are we trying to say, the Indian men are like animals, they jump on anyone the moment they are tingled?

And they think that women in attractive cloths are the cause for their tingling?

Let us stop blaming women for everything. Let men learn to be gentle men.

Let them wear jeans, t shirts but ask them to cover their outfit with burkha... thats what burkha preaches modesty... other religions indirectly agree with the concept of modesty in dress and burkah......
