Beltangady, Feb 22: “Development cannot take place in vacuum or isolation, but in a social frame. Problems are as eternal as society and they should be addressed properly to take forward the developmental process . But due to the lacunae between teaching and practice, the problems are not properly addressed” said Professor YS Sidde Gowda, registrar, Karnataka State Sanskrit University, Bangalore.

He was speaking on the occasion of ‘Sambhrama’- a two day UGC sponsored national seminar on ‘millennium development goals and social sector performance’ organized by the department of PG studies and research in social work of SDM College, Ujire.

He added that, “India has the best human resource, sadly it’s still unused. Due to lack of commitment and integrity, we have not been able to achieve in any of the frontiers”.

Explaining the vastness and dimensions of social work, he opined that “a societal problem can be best addressed by social work students as they study something of everything in their course, be it psychology or economics or history or sociology and many more. But the best part is that a social work student executes his theoretical knowledge in practice in the form of field work. Practical learning is an inseparable part of social work”.
Prema Cariappa, chairperson of central social welfare board, New Delhi inaugurated the seminar.

Professor  Mahaveer Jain, dean of PG studies, SDM College, professor Mohan Narayan, HOD, Department of Political science, SDM College and  Ravi Shankar, HOD, Department of Social work, SDM College, Ujire were the other dignitaries present on the dais.
