Mangalore: IT students design apps for Windows 8 at AIMIT

Mangalore, Feb 27: AIMIT St Aloysius College, Mangalore was one of the fifty Institutions around the Country (and among the two in Karnataka) to be selected for the Microsoft APP fest on February 26.
 
The introduction of ‘Microsoft App Fest 2013’ began at 9 am in the auditorium of St Aloysius College Institute of Management and Information Technology, AIMIT.

Professor Santhosh Rebello, Dean, department of Computer Applications and Bio Informatics, introduced the Microsoft proctor, Ajay Kumar and welcomed the gathering, which included students from the IT Dept of AIMIT, as well as various institutes in and around Mangalore. He said that he was glad to have such innovative programmes conducted for the students, which helped them to enrich their creative and technical skills.
 
Fr Denzil Lobo, director, AIMIT stated that it was great to have AIMIT as a hub centre for this App Fest and said that such programmes help the students to keep pace with the racing speed of Information Technology. He thanked the faculty coordinator of the fest, Thomas CG, and the Microsoft Student Partner, Ashwin Kumar for helping to organize the programme.
 
The introduction was followed by the live streaming of the formal inaugural ceremony held in Mumbai, where several dignitaries spoke on the occasion. The App Fest was declared open with the traditional “Banging of the Gong” by the dignitaries.

Dr S S Mantha, chairman, AICTE congratulated the students participating in the event and thanked Microsoft for holding such an event. The focus of the event is on broad-based consumer applications, incorporating education, games, apps for social good etc. In addition to submitting the apps for evaluation for a chance to get on the Microsoft Store, the training and experience received via this program will boost the students' employability, and create a more capable developer ecosystem in the country.
 
Ajay Kumar, Microsoft Proctor, spoke to the students at AIMIT explaining the relevance of the Windows 8 Operating System. He mentioned that with a similar IDE in the backend, one can run a single app on several devices that include even hand held ones. He also mentioned about several amazing features of the Windows 8 phone such as Multi core Chipset, Graphics Processor, encryptable storage and many more. He encouraged the students to design apps with quality and standards.
 
The students coded applications for the Windows Platform throughout the day under the supervision of Microsoft mentors, trainers and Microsoft Student Partners, and submitted the app online - an opportunity to make it available on the Windows Store after due diligence. The focus will be on broad-based consumer applications, incorporating education, games, apps for social good etc.

In addition to submitting the apps for evaluation for a chance to get on the Microsoft Store, the training and experience received via this program will encourage the students to showcase their creative ideas and implement them using the latest technology.

    Very Good Initiative from the College Management. The Students of AIMIT are lucky enough to be exposed to such as a Good Platform. The students should efficiently make use of the opportunities provided to them.
