Mangalore, Mar 3: “Violence has become very common in the contemporary media which is making the audience very insensitive. It’s also propagating westernization excessively, making our young generation a victim of it. This has led to a state of confusion, insensitivity and insecurity amongst the young generation” said Professor G P Shivram, chairman, department of journalism, Mangalore University.

He was speaking on the occasion of valedictory ceremony of the two-day national seminar on ‘Journalism and Society’ organized by the department of mass communication and journalism.

Presiding over the proceedings, he highlighted the merits of the media by opining that “due to the sudden spurt in media, social media has emerged and is growing in leaps and bounds. The mass appeal created in social sites for issues like the Delhi rape incident and the Anna Hazare’s Jan Lokpal movement demonstrated its effectiveness and lightning speed”.

Ishwar Daitota, independent journalist, G N Mohan, editor of Avadhi e-magazine, professor Jagadeesh Prakash, Bangalore University, professor Bhaskar Hegde, head, department of journalism were the other dignitaries present on the dais.

Anila Baby, lecturer, S D M College welcomed the guests and the gathering; Sunil Hegde, lecturer, S D M College read the consolidated report of the activities of the two-day national seminar.

Earlier, various competitions were organized for the students in which Alva’s college from Moodbidri lifted the overall championship and Karnatak University, Dharwad emerged as runners up.
