UAE diplomat caught while smuggling in 37 kg gold jewellery to Delhi

New Delhi, Mar 13 (PTI): A senior diplomat working in United Arab Emirates Mission was caught allegedly attempting to smuggle about 37 kg of gold jewellery, valued at least Rs 11 crore, at the international airport here.

Acting on intelligence, a team of Directorate General of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials intercepted the diplomat of a counsellor rank and wanted to check his baggage when he arrived by a Singapore flight early morning yesterday, official sources said.

The diplomat initially resisted the request from DRI officials citing “diplomatic immunity”, they said.

However, after issuing of a search order by the DRI, his baggage was checked and gold jewellery weighing about 37 kg was found.

“The diplomat was carrying gold jewellery in a suitcase. He could not give satisfactory answer as to why he was carrying jewellery in such a high volume. He was allowed to leave the airport after necessary formalities,” a DRI official said.

DRI officials have, however, detained a Delhi businessman, who travelled with the diplomat in the same flight for his alleged involvement in the case, he said.

“It is suspected that the businessman has conspired with the diplomat to smuggle jewellery,” the official said, adding that he was being questioned by the DRI officials.

The DRI has taken up the matter with Ministry of External Affairs for further necessary action.

When contacted, MEA officials said “the diplomat will be dealt as per Vienna convention”.

As per the convention, a diplomat enjoys immunity from criminal, civil and administrative jurisdictions of the receiving State.

However, other actions including deportation can be taken against the diplomat on the request of the host government.

Would the UAE govt given this leniency to India Diplomat? Would US customs have allowed such a thing.
All these Arab Countries who believe in Eye for Eye and hand for hand, should be treated in same manner here. Why should the Govt bother about Vienna convention which is probably out of fashion today.

Sure there will be a diplomatic issue here. But look at other way around, when county like Italy deny handover of their two Mariners involved in shootout at Kerala, this case is very silly for that matter. But the thing is, Indian DRI Officers are interested in Delhi Businessman who orchestrated the Import of huge quantity of Gold through this UAE Diplomat. So, something went wrong with this Delhi Businessman rather than holding UAE Diplomat as culprit. Better our Government sort out the matter sooner than later otherwise reciprocal action by UAE Customs Officers are guaranteed with immediate effect and people from India will suffer lot at UAE Airports to bring along with them even Pickle too.

Studying Tax, Duty structure is very interesting..but when it comes for reality it is utter disappointment/Nonsense!,, Rules are only for poor & middle class people, authorities and richer section not bothered about rules and law at all!!
Otherwise, why the rules to bring a very limited (Rs 50k or Rs 100k) gold worth, which is negligible for a person interested to bring gold for marriage ocassions...LET our great UPA government(Chidambaram) realises this to somewhat benifit to the sacrifice of NRE's struggle!!!

Gold coming into India is good for the country in the long run. For short term goal of funding government deficits on external account we restrict its import.

Gold coming to India is good only when it comes through proper channel, not through smuggling.

Legal action should be taken against the diplomat. Law of the land is equal to each and everyone.
