About Patrao Brothers

The late 1970s and early 1980s saw the advent of a number of talented musicians, singers, and song writers on the Mangalore Konkani music scene and it was also a time of great experimentation and evolution in Konkani music.

During this period, Mangalore saw the arrival of two young talented musicians and song writers—the Patrao Brothers of Derebail—John and Anil. Hailing from a family with a music background, they got their first lessons from their father Joachim Patrao, who was a reputed choir master in Mangalore churches.

Elder brother John Patrao, 49, started writing songs at the young age of 15.  His first song ‘Parvo’ become an instant hit and won the first place in singing competitions many times.

Younger brother Anil Patrao, 46, has taken over from his father.  He has been the choir master of Derebail Church for the past 29 years.

The Patrao Brothers staged their first Konkani musical show ‘Patrao Nite’ at Don Bosco Hall, Mangalore, on February 21, 1984. From then on they have staged regular shows in and around Mangalore and have two music albums to their credit.

Over the years, the duo has contributed modest, but qualitative service to Konkani music. Having a deep concern for the future of Mangalorean Konkani Catholic community, all the service rendered to Konkani music and the community has been voluntary.

Congratulation to United Friends Bejai and Patrao brothers for hosting the Patrao night. Both the brothers along with Rony D'cunha had hosted the similar show through CYM in the 70's and many of the singers from Bejai were participants in the show. The song "Parvo" was sung by one of my cousins and my brother and uncle were part of the show as singer and song writer (Nursabai). May the Patrao night rekindle the spirit of music in the parishioners of Bejai which was once known as "Musicians Paradise". All the best to Patrao Brothers and United friends Bejai.
