Mumbai, Apr 20: Malaa Treon, renowned artist and textile designer who started her own design label “Art on Silk” on April 18 launched her first music album ‘Labdiya’.
This album is a celebration of her dream to become a singer. With this album Malaa, now 52 wishes to reach out to every individual who believes in the thinking ‘Dreams have no age’.
Malaa Treon, an entrepreneur and an independent artist who started her career in the backyard of her house has come a long way since then. She is now a big name in the art industry and has received several accolades for her work.
Malaa addressing the media on her debut music album said, ““Being a Punjabi girl, my focus has been on the music that creates a happy feel....just like the drums and dhols of Punjab do! To relive those beats and sounds! I was following a dream, which became a reality now
and I need the world with me to help me carve the new path!
I want to reach to all kinds of people and hence designed the whole album in such a way it caters to all moods and age groups. The album has songs on merry-making, celebrations, love songs, finding love, a lost love story, dance, moments of compassions of our soldiers and their lives and some folk music blended with today’s trend.” Malaa added.
Present in the event was Mr. Ashish Manchanda, Founder, Flying Carpet Productions who officially launched the music album ‘Labdiya’. Also present was, child TV actor Avneet Kaur of Jhalak Dhiklaja Fame (dancer with Darsheel Safari) and Sagar Mhadolkar who choreographed the video for the album.
Speaking on the event Ashish Manchanda commented, “Malaa is immensely talented and has a very strong personality. It is her determination which has got her here today. Not everyone knows she is a singer, composer and a lyricist as well. I wish her all the success in life”.
The first number ‘Labdiya’ is a Punjabi celebration number which talks about the desire of every girl to enjoy freedom yet find love. It is the journey from Finding love to Found the love. The next to release is a sad melody , lost love regained and a thumping dhol number sung and interpreted in 4 languages.
The mixing, mastering and sound engineering is done by Ashish Manchanda, the founder of Flying Carpet Productions. He reigns to be one of the best sound engineers in India and to his credit are, his work with renowned artist like Amit Trivedi, A. R. Rahman, Vishal- ShekharRam Sampath and with producers Bruce Swedien, Ranjit Barot, Rex Rideout, Lesle Lewis and Clinton Cerejo among others. Manchanda was the technical director and chief
engineer for Chivas Studio, MTV Unplugged in India, where he mixed and mastered music.
He was also part of the series The Dewarists and Coke Studio @ MTV, India, NH7 2011 –
Music Festival.

Malaa Treon was born in Africa and studied in Bangalore, New Delhi and London and persued her art in Pune. She has always known that art with textures is her passion. She started her own firm known as Art on Silk in Pune and since then Malaa has been a name in the art industry. She has been applauded by various artists, art fraternities and art galleries like Point of View in Mumbai, Kalakriti gallery in Hyderabad and others all over India. In 2004, while art was playing a major role in her life, Ashish Manchanda, recognized the inherent talent of singing in Malaa. He encouraged her to pursue singing seriously. Since then Malaa trained herself as a singer, while she was still gaining a lot of glory in the world of art.
Malaa was trained under Aruna Badodekar, granddaughter of Hirabai Badodekar who was a renowned artist of her time. Hirabai was an expert in Khyāl, Thumri, Marāthi Nātya Sangeet, and Bhajan. She is credited with having popularized Hindustāni Classical Music among the masses.
She was truly pioneer of concerts by women artists in India. She is the real pioneer and was the first female artist who introduced ticketed concerts in India. Hirabai received several awards, including the Sangeet Nātak Akādemi Award (1955) [1] and the Padma Bhushan Award (1970). Vishnudas Bhave Award for her contribution to theatre. She was chosen to sing the national anthem, Vande Mātaram, from the Red Fort in India's capital New Delhi on the day India received its independence from the British from the British Raj ( August 15, 1947).
