Riyadh, May 28: Konkan Ghar Riyadh (KGR) conducted sports day recently with the Mangalorian community at Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The event commenced at 12.30 pm with the introduction and prayer led by Eric D’sa Pangla.
Edmond Lewis Sastan welcomed the guests and the gathering.
The sports event was inaugurated keeping the traditional practice by lighting the lamp by the guests and the KGR representatives. A short and sweet cultural program comprising a dance fusion performed by Fredlyn and Freeda Mascarenhas Mukamar, Ashlyn Rodrigues Shirva, Caron D’Souza Mudarangady, Elita and Eden D’sa Pangla enthralled the audience. Multi talented Eden D’sa, choreographed the dance. With her melodious voice, Eden D’sa sang a Konkani song ‘Yo Baile Yo’ and a Tulu song ‘Yankla Madhme Appund’ that secured a loud round of applause from the audience.
The main event of the day sports day set in motion by Amitha Prabhu Bijai with her innovative indoor games for the children that included ‘lucky animal game, solving the puzzle and monkey game’.
The outdoor games kicked off with a ‘cycle race competition” for the children below six years. One leg race and balancing the book on the head were conducted for the children aged between 6 – 10 years. Children above ten years took part in one leg race.
Men and women enthusiastically participated in the ‘fast walking race’. ‘Dodging the ball’ for the children and bachelors was a special attraction that entrained the crowd.
Group games comprised of cricket match (six a side), volley ball match for men, and throw ball match for women was organized, wherein the participants displayed the sport spirit and enjoyed the matches.
In between all these activities, there was a special attraction ‘weighing the country cock’ conducted by Royston Prabhu Bijai. Vincy Mathais Pernal took away the country cock for guessing its approximate weight.
Prizes were distributed to the champions – winner and first runner up - in each sports category with individual trophies. Winners of the cricket, volley ball and throw ball were felicitated with gold and silver medals. Team trophies were also given away to the winning teams. Sponsors were honored with KGR mementos for their generous support and valuable contribution for the event.
To satisfy our appetite, very delicious and sumptuous meal was catered by Stanly Cardoza, Paladka. Godwin Mendonca Mudarangady and Edmond Lewis coordinated the outdoor games. Eric D’sa anchored the whole event.
All in all, the whole event which was buzzing with sport activities left thrilling memories in the hearts of each and everyone present at the scene.
