BCCI president should tender resignation: Sports Ministry

New Delhi, May 29 (PTI): N Srinivasan's cup of woes seems to be spilling over with the Sports Ministry today joining the growing chorus of demand for his resignation as BCCI President pending inquiry into the ongoing IPL spot-fixing scandal.

After senior Board officials such as IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla, vice-President Arun Jaitley and Jyotiraditya Scindia urged him to step aside, the Ministry has also sought his ouster.

"BCCI is inquiring into allegations of match and spot fixing. As there is a conflict of interest in this inquiry, therefore BCCI President should tender his resignation on moral grounds, pending the outcome of the inquiry," the Ministry said in a statement.

Srinivasan's son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings CEO Gurunath Meiyappan has been arrested by the Mumbai Police for alleged involvement in betting.

A three-member BCCI inquiry committee is also probing Meiyappan and the allegations against three Rajasthan Royals players and its franchise as well as the Chennai Super Kings.

Justice T Jayaram Chouta, former Judge of the Karnataka and Madras High Courts, Justice R Balasubramanian, former Judge of the Madras High Court, and BCCI Secretary Sanjay Jagdale are members of the Commission.

The Ministry said it is observing the unfolding events "with considerable disquiet" and reiterated its commitment towards a strong anti-corruption law for sports.

"The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is in favour of a law to curb malpractices in all sports. It will send its comments on the bill drafted by the Law Ministry, and is looking forward to working with the Law Ministry and other stakeholders for the development of a comprehensive law against match and spot-fixing," the statement read.

The Ministry, meanwhile, rejected reports that it was in favour of legalising betting to curb corruption in sports.

"The Ministry of Sports has also observed that a section of the Media has reported that it is in favour of a law regularising betting in the sporting events in the country.

"The Ministry clarifies that betting is a State Subject and cannot be part of a Central law. The Ministry has made no recommendations to regularise betting to the Law Ministry or to any other organisation," it said.

Wow, what a match are going through and this time it is a TEST match!

All are corrupt starting from BCCI to Players to Ministers/Government to Business Men's to Shastri's to Gavaskar's to the list goes on n on!

To remove Srinivasan and to bring back BCCI on the right track why we have to go back to the same people who are equally responsible for tarnishing the image of INDIA and Indian Cricket? Why we need to go back to Sharad Pawar, Jaitly, Dalmiya, Ravi Shastri, Gavaskar, Shukla and so on. Why we don't have any new face to save our Image and our Cricket?

We don't know why Mr. SRINIVASN is not resigning from the post of presidentship of BCCI inspite of so many indirect allegation against him. This clearly shows that there is some serios foul play is involved which he wants to safeguard.Impose impeachment and remove him to save BCCI without giving any scope for further misappropriation.Thanq.

This over grown toad has the support of mega fixers like Jaitley and Modi and he therefore will never resign. He needs to be physically picked up and thrown out of the BCCI building, until then he will use fevicol to stick himself to the chair. He is not just a disgrace to cricket and humanity but also to his own existence.

Agreed fully...........Even Jaitley and Modi do not have any moral authority to continue in power. While being in the cricket board they are condoning corruption, one fears for the fate of our country if they ever come to power.
