Kuwait, Jan 4: The new year couldn’t take off better for Sharq United after they won a major 12-team cricket tourney held at the prestigious KCA grounds, Abbassiya, Kuwait on Sunday, January 1, 2006 organized by Eleven Star Cricket Club, Kuwait.

Sharq United cruised towards the finals with convincing victories over Deccan Classic Cricket Club and Al-Ahleia XI in the earlier rounds.

The grand finale was against one of the favorites to win the trophy – GCC XI. However, after winning the toss, Steve, captain of Sharq United elected to bat and Sharq United put up a fighting total of 73 for 4 in the allotted 12 overs with top scores from Arthur (24) and Binu (32). GCC XI were bundled out for just 30 runs due to some amazing opening spells from Vincent (2/8) and Arthur (4/3).

Rejo, captain of GCC XI congratulated the Sharq United team for their professional performance during the entire tournament. Rishi, on behalf of the organizers also appreciated the dominant performance from Sharq United players.

During the presentation ceremony, Mahesh, president of Sharq United thanked the hosts for excellent organization of the tourney and proudly announced Sharq United’s two tournament victories within a span of ten days, the previous one being the BEC Exchange Cricket Trophy on December 23, 2005.

During the current tourney, Arthur from Sharq United won the man-of-the-match awards for all three matches played, the best batsman award for the entire tourney and also the coveted man-of-the series award for his truly brilliant performance, both with the bat and ball.

Sharq United were also champions in the inaugural New Year Cricket Tournament held last year, thus making it two in a row.
