Films can be made without songs: Mysskin

Chennai, Jun 23 (IANS): Tamil filmmaker Mysskin, who has not included any song in his upcoming thriller "Onayum Aatukuttiyum", says films can be made without songs.

"It's a myth that we can't make films without songs. Audiences have changed with time and are looking forward to be surprised with cinema. I think we can still make films with no songs provided we have content that can keep them engaged for nearly two hours," Mysskin, who has written, directed and produced "Onayum Aatukuttiyum", told IANS.

"I'm not against the concept of songs. Even my films in the past have had songs, but I believe they shouldn't be included just for entertainment. If it really serves as catalyst to drive the story, then it could be included," said the filmmaker, who also plays an important role in his upcoming thriller.

However, Mysskin has roped in maestro Illayaraja to compose the background score.

"Songs were unnecessary for this film, but music was very important. I personally requested Raja sir to compose the background music. Initially, he wasn't interested but after I narrated the script, he instantly agreed to work," he added.

As part of the background score, Illayaraja is using Austrian composer Gustav Mahler's Symphony No.5.

"Onayum Aatukuttiyum" doesn't even have a heroine.

"It's an action-thriller featuring lot of new faces. I didn't find the need to have a heroine and, therefore, didn't bother to rope in one. I think it's very important to cast as per your need. One unneeded character can prove unworthy for the film," Mysskin said.

Known for making Tamil films such as "Anjathe" and "Yuddham Sei", Mysskin is producing "Onayum Aatukuttiyum" under his home banner Lone Wolf Productions.

The film, which is nearing completion, is likely to hit cinemas soon.
