Mangalore, Jan 17:  The police have confirmed the arrest of the accused in the rape of a nine-year-old girl on Sunday January 15. As per initial reports the accused had been identified as Nagesh.  But confirmed reports now suggest that his name is Nagraj (40), a resident of Bondel.

Nagraj a native of Mudigere taluk in Chikmagalur resides with his family at Bondel here, from the past ten years.  He has two daughters.  While the first one is fourteen year old, the second is nine year old.

The accused after raping the minor, gave some money to the victim and fled the place after deserting her at Alape near Padil junction.  An auto rickshaw driver who saw the helpless girl, dropped her to her residence at Bajal. But the police on questioning the driver could not extract any information from him.

The girl identified the vehicle of the accused to be a new Honda Activa scooter with black in colour. She also recalled that a picture of Lord Ganesh was attached to the front of the vehicle. The police formed groups and went in different directions hunting for the accused, as directed by Dayananda, superintendent of police, and based on the only clue available.

One of the police teams was successful in nabbing the culprit during a vehicle check and the accused admitted to the crime.

A case has been booked against Nagraj under Rape and SC/ST Atrocities Act.
