Mangalore, Aug 10: The Mahatma Gandhi Peace Foundation on Saturday August 10 organized an elocution and singing competition for the students as a part onserving the ‘Quit India’ day here at Tagore Park.
MCC commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde inaugurated the competition by adorning a garland to the Mahatma Gandhi’s statue. Corporator A C Vinayraj was the chief guest for the programme.
Speaking after the inauguration, MCC commissioner said, " I gladly agreed to come to this programme as I love my nation and the fondness for the great freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi."
Briefing the students about the Quit India Movement which was held in 1942, he said, “Even though 71 years have passed, we still remember this historic moment and may we continue to do so in the future.”
He also added, “Quit India Movement should be remembered golden words, as it was for the first time the tri-color flag was hoisted and the movement also gave a good momentum for freedom fighters to work towards Independence of the country."
He noted, “for the present generation, India’s Independence is just a story and they are not serious about it, which is quite sad; whereas there have been a number of people who have struggled for our freedom in the past."
He also requested the students to respect the soldiers who work for the safety of the nation.
"It is known that in most of the schools, students are sent home by distributing the Independence Day sweets on August 14 itself which is inappropriate. With regards to this, the MCC held a discussion with the district administration, so that students know the importance of Independence," stated Hegde.
He also assured that the MCC would render support for the repair work at the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Foundation at Tagore Park.
On the occasion, Aranya Mitra awardee B S Hasanabba was felicitated by the dignitaries.
Sadanand Shetty, president of Mahatma Gandhi Peace Foundation; vice president Seetharam Shetty; secretary Dr Ismail N, treasurer P Sadanand; joint secretary Herald D’Souza were present.
