BJP asks centre to seek report on Mumbai gang-rape

New Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS): The opposition BJP Saturday asked the centre to seek a report from the Maharashtra government on the gang-rape of a photojournalist in Mumbai two days ago.

"The law and order situation has become precarious in the state. In the last one month, four such incidents have taken place. The centre should ask for a report from the Maharashtra government," senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde said in the Lok Sabha.

The 22-year-old woman photojournalist, who was at work shooting in the deserted Shakti Mills Compound, near Mahalaxmi railway station in Mumbai, was gang-raped Thursday night by five men.

Agreeing with Munde, Trinamool Congress member Saugata Roy said: "The situation is terrible. There should be stricter control over illegal alcohol and drugs consumption".

Responding to the concerns expressed by the members, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath said: "This is a serious issue. The home minister will make a statement on the issue in the house Aug 26".
