Udupi: Prowling panther pays 'visit' to house at Kadoor, caught by forest dept

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (EP)

Udupi, Sep 11: A rare visitor created much excitement at Kadoor near Kokkarne in Brahmavar here on Wednesday September 11.

The visitor, a ferocious panther, was caught in a metal cage by the forest department.

The panther, which had come hunting, had entered a bath enclosure located behind house of Kamala Shedthi here at around 2 am. It spotted a two-month-old puppy lying near the washing machine and tried to attack it. The puppy tried to defend itself and in the ensuing struggle, injured the panther. The puppy managed to escape its grasp as it lay in a spot beyond the reach of the panther.

Meanwhile, Sheena Marakala, a worker who was sleeping in the premises, heard sounds and on investigating, spotted the panther. He informed his neighbour, a panchayat member, and then locked the bath house.

On Wednesday morning, the Neelavar forest officials were informed, and the animal was successfully lured into a cage in an operation that lasted several hours. The animal was later released into Kudremukh national park.

Though wild animals can be seen coming to the town often, the arrival of a black panther was rare.

As the news spread, curious people came in large numbers to see the rare animal.

    Everytime forest dept captures the wild animal it will be released into Kudremukh national park.Is this park is a unlimited animal habitat?Usually hunting animals adopt a territory.There will be tough fight if it is invaded by a new comer.Black panthers are rare species in India.Sad to note,We totally lost our ecosystem.Now a days lot of peacocks we find across NH66 near residential areas.Beautiful butterflies totally disappeared.Tailer bird and nest during mansoon not found.Kingfishers,wood peckers are vanished.Even seasonal birds like parrots and grey cranes in muddy fields not seen.I grew up watching all these visitors every season.Now I find every nuke and corner a sign board "Site for Sale".It indirectly hints "Animals Right for Sale".Deforestation,sale of prime fertile agricultural land to convert layout is at the peak.Our father of nation rightly said-"This world is having enough for someones need not for his greed".

    Dear Jaimini I too enjoyed Kundapura kannada in this video.Dialogue of the day "Kai haakbedi".Single panther threatening 100 people eventhough confined in a cage.Real hero of piliwood(pili wood)

    It we greedy human beings who have snatched everything from these poor animals. Their shelters have been converted into business ground. They have no place to stay, what will they do. Nice that it was rescued on time by forest department. The extent of grabbing land has reached out to the forest now. We greedy Human Beings.........

    Too much of conservation has helped growth of animal population in India without a proper study on the subject. Even in Africa endangered animals are culled / shot, to have a population balance. The environment needs that too. Each animal has to territory to wander in search of prey. When the animal population increases of a certain breed territorial fights take place and these animals stray into human habitat.

    If there is no scientific culling, one day we will have more animals than people.

    @damodar!
    are you even aware how much the human population has increased in India in the last few decades. From 300 million in 1947 to more than 1.2 million while at the same time forest's have been systematically destroyed and most wildlife species driven to the brink of extinction. Please refrain from making such ignorant remarks as it only highlights your lack of knowledge. It is the human population growth in India that needs to be urgently controlled.

    Suppose the panther had found Kamala Shedthi in the bath enclosure screaming for help, the panther would have replied " Do not be afraid.I have not come to harm you or rape you cos I am not a human-being.All that I need is food and shelter which you have snatched away from me.Please have some pity on me."

    Looking out for food...if you cut forests,,, which results in less prey for Panther,,, it has no other choice than look for food in houses(domestic animals)...

    Its not Panthers faults.... its People's fault ,,, who cut the trees and make it impossible for wild animals to live in Wilderness...

    Human beings are worst animals in the world absolutely....Shame on you petty human beings....

    Langoolacharya, Belman/Washington,DC,
    You say shame on you petty human beings.
    Then what are you? One generation before humans or have advanced to the next?
    Why don't you animal lovers abroad get together and donate generously so that you can buy a 1000 hectares of forest and look after all the animals that are endangered or hungry!
    A very novel ideal isn't it?

    @MV Periera!
    You are not even aware that it takes an extraordinarily long period of for a forest to develop and for wild species to establish there. Do you think that developing a forest is easy as building an apartment for people like you to live in? Besides 1000 hectares would amount to nothing as all the wildlife in India on the brink of extinction. Your idea is neither novel nor practical. It only serves to highlight your lack of knowledge on this matter. A country like India needs at least 33% of the land to be under forest cover. But instead we have just 19% and that too heavily degenerated.

    Shame on you means shame on all human beings for their unmatched greed,selfishness and cruelty shown towards the wild animals of the forest. All living beings have an equal right to live just like us humans. Instead we destroy forests, kill animals, drive several species into extinction then blame the poor animals for intruding into what was once it's own habitat. The people should who destroy wildlife should be put in that cage.

    Completely agree with your thoughts & observations made, as you have put it across most aptly!

    "Life is as dear to a mute creature as it is to man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not die, so do other creatures" - His Holiness, The Dalai Lama

    "The indifference, callousness and contempt that so many people exhibit toward animals is evil first because it results in great suffering in animals, and second because it results in an incalculably great impoverishment of the human spirit" - Ashley Montagu

    "Animals are reliable, many full of love, true in their affections, predictable in their actions, grateful and loyal. Difficult standards for people to live up to" - Alfred A. Montapert
