Mangalore, Feb 28:
The Supreme Court's directive on compulsory registration of marriages is "practically impossible" to implement, according to the Assistant General Secretary of All India Muslim Personal Law Board.

"The registration of marriage is practically impossible to implement since it has many problems," Abdul Rahim Qureshi told reporters in Mangalore on Monday.

"Can an agricultural labourer spend Rs 500 for registration when his earning is very low," he asked.

The Court on February 14, 2006 had directed the Centre and state governments to take steps for amending the rules and procedures within three months for making registration of marriages compulsory.

Qureshi said a similar law, which was enacted in Maharashtra, could not be implemented properly.

The AIMPLB is conscious of the need for social reformation of Muslims and it has launched a campaign in this regard which was catching up gradually, Qureshi said.

Meanwhile, the Board has decided to hold its executive meeting in Bangalore next month, he said.
