Moodbidri, Feb 28: "The environment influences the youth. The parents and institution have to guide them to the required level. Proper recognition of and support for talents alone can mould the youth into worthy citizens of the society," said Pushparaj Hegde, international weightlifter and Asiad and an alumnus of St Philomena College, Puttur.

He was speaking after honouring the sports winners as chief guest at the Indian Catholic Youth Movement's 25 years and Shirtady Catholic Sabha unit's 10 years celebration at Shirtady.

ICYM diocesan director Fr Elias D'Souza presided over and said life was hard for the present-day youth because of the competitive atmosphere. Youth have to be educated to be competent.

Catholic Sabha central committee president Andrew Noronha inaugurated the function and gave the message. Moodbidri zone president for ICYM Fr Anil, Shirtady parish priest Fr Paul, Catholic Sabha  varado president Alwyn, ICYM varado president Vinod and Shirtady parish vice president Louis D'Costa honoured the past presidents as well as winners in sports held as part of the celebration winners of the celebration.

ICYM president Shanti Pinto welcomed and Catholic Sabha president Stella Mascarenhas voted thanks. ICYM secretary Rajesh Fernandes and Catholic Sabha secretary George Pereira read the reports. Priya and Rockwin compered.

There were colourful entertainment programmes in the night by the members of dual associations.
