Mangalore, Feb 28: (Tuesday, 8-30 pm): At a a solemn ceremony on Tuesday evening on the Sandesha Foundation lawns, the state-level annual Sandesha awards were presented to nine achievers in their fields and an institution working for the emotional integration in the society.

Bishop Aloysius P D'Souza presided over the function. Administrative Reforms Commission chairman and former state CM M Veerappa Moily could not be present. Two other chief guests - eminent film-maker T S Nagabharana and Mangalore University vice chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa - did the honours of presenting the awards. Tulu Sahitya Academy president Seetaram Kulal and Konkani Sahitya Academy president Eric Ozario were guests of honour. Trustee Galdin D'Souza  and manager Leo D'Souza were also on the dais.

The selection of awardees was done by a panel of jury consisting of Kannada novelist Na D'Souza, Prof Amrit Someshwar, Richard Lewis, academic Dr Na Da Shetty, Fr Mark Valder, author-novelist Sara Abubaker and Chandrakala Nandavar.

The awards were instituted by the Erods group in memory of Stany Rodrigues, Raknno in commemoration of it Diamond Jubilee, Geeta S M Shetty of Ganjimutt, Light of the Heart Foundation, The SRA Sisters in memory of their founder Fr Antonius Maria Bodewig, PVS Memorial Trust by trustees Madhusudan and Sarojini Kushe, the Bethany Sisters in memory of their founder Msgr R F C Mascarenhas, Amit and Atul Prabhu in memory of their mother Ethel Prabhu

Earlier, the award-winners and dignitaries were welcomed with 'poornakumbhas' and were led in a procession to the dais, to the sounds of traditional horns and drums. An invocation dance was presented by the students of the Sandesha Lalitkala Mahavidyalaya. Head of the panel of jury Na D'Souza spoke about the awards and the impeccable selection process. The citations were read out by Dr Na Da Shetty and Irene Rebello-D'Cunha Hosabettu.

Messages to suit the occasion were delivered by Nagabharana and Prof K M Kaveriappa while Eric Ozario released a CD. A R Mitra and Mynavati responded on behalf of awardees. Bishop Aloysius D'Souza gave the presidential address. Tulu Academy president honoured the founders, jury and sponsors. Galdin D'Souza proposed a vote of thanks.

The function ended with a cultural programme wherein a song-dance number on woman power by Janadani, a song by Wilfy and Meena Rebimbus, a song by B S Talwadi, Vande Mataram by Vishwas Rebimbus and troupe and a song on youth by Janadani were presented.

Very effective compering by journalist Manohar Prasad and strict adherence to the time schedule were hallmarks of the programme.
