Kundapur, Mar 1: The thought of a usual spine surgery is sure to send shivers down ones spine. But Dr Kodlady Surendra Shetty who introduced minimal invasive spine surgery to the state for the first time has decided to open a separate department in his hospital for conducting this surgery.

Yet another feature to his cap, Dr Shetty who is the administrative medical officer of Vijayasri Orthopedic Hospital who was studying under a Korean orthopedic hospital since a year has completed the FRCS (US) degree at USA Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Medical College.

He is one among the three Indians and only one from Karnataka out of the total 11 people from the world who took this examination.

In the past, surgery on spine was conducted by subjecting the patient to general anesthesia and surgery involved cutting through muscles of the area where it pained and the cartilages had to be cut through. In the minimal invasive spine surgery, local anesthesia is administered and the surgery is conducted through the endoscope equipment without bothering the patient much.
