Army officer among nine killed in Jammu terror attack

Jammu, Sep 26 (IANS): Nine people, including an army officer, were killed Thursday when separatist guerrillas mounted an audacious attack on a police station in Jammu region
and commandeered a truck which they drove into an army camp where soldiers took them on.

The brazen attack took place ahead of ahead of Sep 29 meeting between Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in New York on the sidelines of the UN general assembly meet.

Three militants reached the Hira Nagar police station in Kathua district in an autorickshaw, police sources told IANS.

They then attacked the police station, which is barely seven km from the international border.

"Militants used grenades and automatic weapons to attack the Hira Nagar police station today (Thursday) morning...," said a source.

The rebels lobbed grenades and fired automatic weapons, killing a shopkeeper.

Four policemen were also killed.

At least four people suffered critical splinter and bullet injuries.

Once the attack at the police station got over, the guerrillas shot dead a truck driver and stole his truck that was parked at the police station complex and escaped.

They took to the Pathankot-Jammu highway and the gunmen opened fire in Samba town -- only to run into Indian troops. The highway has now been closed.

"We intercepted the truck which the militants were driving in Samba area," a military spokesperson told IANS.

Army sources said the militants then entered an army unit of Samba brigade, about 35 km from Jammu, and opened fire. Exchange of fire between the militants and the security forces is underway.

An army officer and two soldiers were killed while three soldiers were wounded.

"There has been an attack on a police station and an army camp...we are collecting information," union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told reporters in New Delhi.

Army sources say that they have taken the help of helicopters, which were used to bring army commandos to the site of the firing.

The Samba brigade belongs to the 9 Corps, which is headquartered in Himachal Pradesh. It falls under army's Western Command.

Ramesh, the trouble is, 95% of our population have an apathy towards the security of the nation, and towards our armed forces. The comments on this very forum against Gen VK Singh shows how little we care about our men and women in uniform.

Our so called "leaders" have lost the last modicum of decency. How else can we explain a PM who is "keen to talk" to Nawaz Sharrif in NY when month after month a new terror attack is unleashed on our cities ?

8 comments on this story and 150 comments on something that has 'Modi' in the headlines. That's the problem with the masses of our unfortunate nation.

    Dear Mathew,
You hit the nail on the head - !!!
    Absolutely second what you say.
The Paki b*****ds cut off our brave soldiers heads and our (I am ashamed to say our) PM is desperate to talk to Nawaz Sharif.
He rarely opens his mouth on important issues otherwise and he wants to go to New York for talks.
Does the blood of our soldiers and innocent civilians have no value ? Shame on him.

Every thing is so clear. The Paki PM is on visit, to US and also gonna meetIndian PM. To strengthen his negotiation power there is church bombing, Kenya bombing and indian border attacks. But our deaf and dumb leaders do not understand or do not want to understand ? How long will our country waste its resources with a failed terrorist and despicable nation ? Do we need to talk at all ?

If the cross border terrorism is not dealt harshly this kind of barbaric attacks will continue. We India a great nation with huge military power blinking like a helpless baby for what? The need of the hour is strong and tough leadership to demolish the enemy. If we keep on applying butter with a blind pretext of "Peace Talk" I am sure we end up losing more and more lives of our army as well innocent civilians. Urgently we have to attack the borders where terrorist have their camps and training centers. Do we have the guts to do it without further delay? I am sure there is huge laps in security and lapse in intelligence? The terrorists are coming across from Pak border like
ants and seems to be no control over them. We must attack Pak border Israeli style just send barrage of missiles and destroy the camps like pack of cards. Can we do this? We need a strong LEADER in India and I have strong feeling NARENDRA MODI only can handle this and if it become true we certainly have won the battle against 'TERRORISM'.

This dirty game is repeated by ISI & Pakistan Army since last 30 years. That is - whenever there is an attempt to normalize the relations between both countries by Prime Ministers or whenever Premiers of both country come on same international platform, here back home the ISI/Pak Army either push terrorist inside Kashmir and attack Indian Security forces, or resort to unprovoked firing by Pak Army on Indian Army in Kargil/Poonch, to coincide with such meeting of Leaders of both Countries.
Even though Pakistan Politicians want normal relations with India, the ISI & Pak Army is against it, that is why this double game every time talks take place between Indian & Pak.

In recent years our stand on KASHMIR was totally diluted..Pakis are bleeding our nose but we are talking about dialogue..yes dialogue is best way to solve the problem but if it is with a sane country not with insane country..when we have not achieved anything in 65 years by dialogue, can we expect any change in another 65 years..we are losing our precious life of soldier who is son, husband & father, for und war..Just count soldier death in recent 5 to 6 month, you will get a alarming figure..why we are failing to give a fitting reply & say enough is enough..
