If dialogue stalls, it would be great injustice: Omar

Srinagar, Sep 26 (IANS): If the dialogue process between India and Pakistan gets stalled following the terror attack in Jammu region Thursday, "it would be great injustice", said Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

The terror strike has been carried out by forces inimical to peace between India and Pakistan, he said.

Speaking to reporters at a hurriedly convened press conference at his high security residence in summer capital Srinagar, the chief minister said: "I condemn the attack and condole the families of those civilians and security personnel who have lost their lives in the attack".

He said the attack was carried out with the objective to derail the forthcoming meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in New York.

"If the dialogue process gets stalled by this attack, it would be great injustice with those martyred in today's incident," he said.

He said 12 people had been killed in this terror strike.

He said it would be difficult for him to speculate whether the terror attack had the backing of the elected government in Pakistan. But, he said those who carried out the attack had infiltrated from across the border during the last 12 hours.

He said it was possible that Manmohan Singh would be under pressure to stop talking to Nawaz Sharif and take an alternative course.

But he wanted the talks to continue so that forces inimical to the peace process do not succeed.

The chief minister said he would go to winter capital Jammu Thursday and visit the places where the terror attack occurred.

He said he would also convene a meeting of top security officials to review the security situation in the wake of the terror attack.

The chief minister said state home secretary, Suresh Kumar and Director General of Police Ashok Prasad have left for Jammu.
