Govt ordinance wrong, should be torn up, thrown away: Rahul

New Delhi, Sep 27 (IANS): In what is being seen as a divide between the government and the ruling party, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Friday said the Manmohan Singh government was "wrong" in clearing an ordinance that seeks to save convicted lawmakers from disqualification and, in his opinion, it should be "torn up and thrown away".

"What the government has done is wrong," Gandhi told journalists in a dramatic appearance at the Press Club of India this afternoon and a three-minute interaction with the media there.

Seeking to project the Congress party's line on the controversial ordinance - sent by the cabinet to the president - that has evoked sharp response from sections of the opposition and the public at large, Gandhi said: "It is time to stop this nonsense.

"My opinion of the ordinance is that it is completely nonsense and should be torn up and thrown away."

He said the ordinance was born out of "political considerations" and it was time "political parties, including mine, should stop making these kind of compromises.

"The arguments that are being made and I have heard the arguments in my organisation, the arguments that are being made is that we need to do this because of political considerations. Everybody does this, the Congress party does this, the BJP does it, the Janata Dal does this, Samajwadi Party does it," a bearded Gandhi, wearing his trademark kurta-pyjama, said.

"Whether it is the Congress or the BJP, we cannot continue make these small compromises. I am not interested in what any opposition leader says. I am not interested in what the Congress party is doing. I personally believe with what our government has done in this ordinance is wrong," he emphasised.

The de facto number two in the party refused to take any other question, indicating that he had just come to give his "personal opinion" on the ordinance that was passed by the cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Tuesday. The cabinet took the decision a day before prime minister left for a five-day visit to the US.

"I am not going to get into a long drawn press conference. I am here to meet the press ..and then I am going back to work," Gandhi said and left as quickly as he had come.

As most journalists were surprised to see Rahul Gandhi, who rarely interacts with the media, he explained he was talking to Ajay Maken, the person in charge of the party's media communication, who told him that he was going to speak on the ordinance to journalists.

"He gave me the line which every party would give you," he said amidst laughter, and then went on to drop the bombshell that he thought the ordinance was wrong.

The ordinance is with President Pranab Mukherjee, who has already sought clarifications from Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Law Minister Kapil Sibal. The Manmohan Singh government has been facing flak for the ordinance that overturns the Supreme Court ruling that barred convicted MPs and legislators from contesting elections.

AAP members meet president, oppose ordinance

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members Friday met President Pranab Mukherjee and urged him not to sign an ordinance that shields convicted lawmakers.

The ordinance, which has been approved by the union cabinet, reverses the Supreme Court judgment mandating the immediate disqualification of lawmakers convicted for a criminal offence punishable with a jail term of more than two years.

"We told the president that the ordinance is against the wish of the people and urged him not to sign it," AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal told reporters after the meeting.

He also "challenged" political parties opposing the ordinance to declare they will not give tickets to tainted candidates.

"The political parties say something, and do something else. I challenge all parties who are opposing the ordinance, declare that you will not give tickets to convicts and tainted candidates," Kejriwal said.

Asked about the president's response, Kejriwal said he listened to them but did not give any assurance.

"President's role here is limited, he can only return the ordinance for reconsideration, we hope he does that," he said.

    Dear Mr. Rakesh,

Do not try to ridicule Rahul Gandhi based on the fake video (shown partly) uploaded by Sangh supporters which is conveniently edited to show Rahul in poor light.

I have seen the complete video and Rahul Gandhi says scale of Gujarat is bigger than U.K. and Scale of India is bigger than U.K and USA put together. He is right. Intellectual young professionals present there understood that scale refers to population and he got big applause from the crowd. I think Sangh supporters do not understand what scale means and they consider it as geographical size.

I am sure the IQ level of intellectuals present there is much higher than some of the Sangh supporters who enjoy fake speeches with imaginary figures of their leader.

Ajay Makhan the spokesman of Congress become real laughing stock, in this whole fiasco.
They showed on TV that Ajay Maakhan had called a Press Meet to justify the govt's Ordinance and when he was half way through the press meet he suddenly received a phone call from Pappu himself to pause press meet. Then within five minutes Pappu baby arrived and directly started talking against Ordinance and left within two minutes. Thereafter same Ajay Makan continued Press meet and he spoke just opposite of what he had spoken 10 minutes back. Comparison of his both press statements just 10 minutes apart had completely opposite views and his embarrassment was quite visible when journalists asked him reasons for such sudden change. No where in the world in a Democracy such a fiasco was enacted by ruling party's official spokesman making mockery of whole democracy of our Nation.

On reading the comments, one can realize most of us like to be ruled by criminals and rapists. At least there is one honest and people pro leader we have found and most people are against him instead of supporting his clear vision. Whether it is a drama or cinema, what is told is cent per cent correct and good for the nation. One needs guts to speak against his own party and call a spade a spade. We need a PM like Mr. Rahul Gandhi and not a person who divide the country on religion, who kills our own Indians, who fools people by speech which is coming from his lips and not from the heart. Rahulji speaks from heart. Long live Rahulji. Jai Hind.

He has to expand his vocabulary from words like 'nonsense' and 'tear it up' 'throw out etc. Remember he did the same with the manifesto of the Samajvadi Party? Two birds in one shot!
Congress knew how bad was the decision for an ordinance on this issue. they were just hunting for a stage to withdraw. meanwhile, for the next term they wanted to position RG on top of MMS. A veteran economist can not be replaced by a dumb kid just like that. Can it be?
Every congressmen was supporting the ordinance. Infact RG walked into a press conference where a CONG spokes person was speaking, interupted and gave his great words that the ordinance should be rolled and thrown.Surprisingly the spokesperson was talking opposite to what he spoke just minutes before.
It was a well staged act where RG was made a hero and MMS a zero.
The nation understood this very well. its just that the congress doesnt accept the fact.

When BJP started opposing the ordinance, suddenly some written documents presented to Rahul and Makan explained the situation to him to read out the message and vanish from press meeting. But as usual for our die hard Congi Dongi supporters Rahul became hero of the hour. In another land mark case, one of the culprits held for Ajmer blasts, Bhavesh Patel has given written application to Session Court Judge that he met Feku Diggi Singh and others to malign RSS leaders which shows who is real “Feku” now. “Satyameva Jayete” proved once again too

Because Cong came to know that President Pranab Mukharji is deadly against this Ordinance and he will not sign it. So just to save their face and take wind out of the sail of Pranabdaa and give Credit to Rahul, Cong strategists have drawn the plan of public announcement by Rahul against Ordinance. Being Vice President of UPA all the while Rahul was involved in finalizing the Ordinance. Then how come suddenly it dawned upon him that Ordinance is anti-democracy only after Pranabdaa raised serious objections ? Why he did not raise objection in so many earlier meetings ? Every thing is just a drama by Cong to Save their face and also to give borrowed Shine to Rahul's name.

These guys who had written off Rahul Gandhi as 'Pappu', 'Amul Baby' etc. have suddenly received a shock treatment by Rahul's guts to stand up and speak out against wrong. Thats why they are desperately trying to run him down by saying, "oh,its all a drama", 'where was he till now ?" etc.etc. The fact is that Rahul Gandhi has made a statement that is correct, bold and in the interest of the nation. What matters is the substance of what he said and not the timing.

Sanghis now realise that Pappu has b@!!$.

Modi news will now on be relegated to the side lines because he is so repetitive and boring and his so called jokes amuse only a particular category of followers.

appreciate your way of defending Rahul, till yesterday, i was of the opinion that he could be PM sooner or later but he proved he is not matured enough to step into PM's shoes because the language he has used and the body language never suggests he is matured. Moreover, he is completely lacking experience in politics, he is rated as PM-in-waiting, time will reveal all. RG made enough damage to its own party than BJP did this time, this is the second self goal by CONG after 1-5-12 rupees sufficient for food a day. Message is clear that Cong is all out to be in the power not for the sake of power but to save from currupt money and all wrong doings, not good sign for the country and its future.

It is expected that every anti-Congress person will be stunned by Rahul's tough stand and will therefore try to run Rahul down as you too have done here.

In fact I was of the opinion that Rahul has still some way to mature as a leader. Yesterday I was shocked but yes I was pleasantly shocked at Rahul's stance. He used strong language as the issue demanded it. Mind you he is not PM nor has he been d as PM candidate so there is no problem if he uses an aggressive tone when needed. The way politics is practised is constantly evolving so people's opinion on the whether the choice of using strong language for a given situation is good or not varies from individual to invidual.

Sanghis are nervous because now they dont know what bombshell to expect next from Rahul.

Anyway I am against communal ideology and the distorted version of Hindutva.

So whether the Congress is good or not, they are definitely my choice as they do not preach hatred towards fellow Indians/humans. All other matters, corruption whatever are secondary to this.

Make no mistake this is clearly a ploy by the Congress party to launch Raul to the forefront. After all they have projected him as a Prime Ministerial choice. There is surely a hidden agenda in his quick and abrupt disapproval of the Ordinance regarding corrupt netas. Kapil Sibal is the architect of this ordinance route and this was unanimously approved by the cabinet before the Prime Ministers departure. Surely the party president and vice president were on board when it was passed. So why all the fuss now, it is just a ploy to give the voters the impression that the country should support this handsome, young, clean and independent thinker to be our next Prime Minister.

This entire thamasha was kick-started by Milind and so fearlessly supported by Rahul - this must be some kind of a joke. Do they really have the spine to defy the senior party whip? Where was the same Rahul when our country's prestige was in question and we became the laughing stock of world, hosting the most corruptly manned Commonwealth Games ever, he did not utter a word then. So my advice don't read too much into what is being staged right now....its one of those dirty games in vote bank politics.

The ordinance was introduced some time back and already sent to president for approval. President already asked certain clarifications. This ordinance itself is to circumvent the Supreme Court ruling. Today's press meet by Rahul raise some pertinent questions.

Being the Vice President of the party, was he not aware or involved in the initial discussions or policy decisions?
Even if he was not involved or aware, was it right for him to do a press meet and denounce it? If any other party member done that, what could have been the repercussions?

Have you seen him doing a press meet on any other issues of national importance. We are yet to see him doing a general press meet and taking questions from the journalists. Even we are waiting for him to appear in any discussion forum. In this case, doing a press meet, after President didn't approve it first time, and also there is growing opposition from the people, shows political opportunism from him?

When he says govt is wrong, does it make him either resign his positions and leave the govt and party who has done wrong. Either he should have done it or influenced his mother to not approve this ordinance itself.

    I rest my case.

Pappu's timing, speaking against the ordinance only at the very end when entire nation and opposition parties are all against it, tells everything. UPA's image has been irreparably tarnished by its attempt to pass this pro-corruption law, so they have decided to scrap it and salvage the situation by at least letting Pappu claim some brownie points by opposing it. Very soon the UPA will do a complete U-turn and withdraw this ordinance and Manish Tiwari, Digvijay, Sanjay Jha etc will say this Pappu showed decisive leadership and single-handedly got it cancelled!

so is it only now that PM is in stress ? hasn't he been reading comments from public on so many forums out there ? anyways anice stage drama by congress to launch pappu gandhi. Look at this, the PM works for Sonia, the entire govt follows sonia orders and Sonia is doing everything to make Pappu great in eyes of Public. So it is hard to believe that Sonia Gandhi and hence pappu was not aware of the cabinet decision in first place..... nice work congress. nice script, nice ution , wonderful actors.... only thing missing are some songs.

Yes, whatever Joseph wrote makes sense!
After Indira exploded the first nuclear device, there was ban on all nuclear material & technology to India, which helped India to develop its own.
After Rajiv Gandhi took over in 1985, he had very good relationship with US, but when he found they were not stopping Pakistan's Nuclear weapons program with stolen technology as well as Chinese help, He called a meeting with all the Nuclear Scientists & discussed with them the Security of the nation in relation to looming nuclear threat from border rogue state.
In 1987 Rajiv Gandhi gave orders to build new nuclear devices to safeguard India.
This shows Congress Leaders had longterm as well Visionary Steps not only economical but defense as well.
In 10 years Atalji became PM & wanted to show the world we won't buckle against any Nations, & he exploded the devices of past with newer technology. Rest is History.
Inflation is reflected in Price of ALL commodities as well as Services just as stated by Joseph.

I am appalled at the comments made by Sangh supporters here about Rahul Gandhi’s press conference. They have problems when Rahul do not speak and they have problems when he speaks. Rahul speaks as a common man without mincing words. Sangh people do not like this.

They like rhetoric comments of their leader Modi who considers himself as superman and whenever opens his mouth gives out one more lie. Latest lie is about the GDP growth during Vajpayee regime (8.4%) against UPA regime (4.8%). Fact is it was 6% average during NDA and UPA's first term was 8.4 per cent and 7.3 per cent during the first four years, and 4.8% in the current year of UPA-II. Only sad part is Modi is able to give fake figures again and again but Sangh parivar people consider this is the quality of a strong leader.

If you watch and compare how Rahul and Modi speaks, you can see the difference. Rahul speaks as common educated man but when Modi speaks it will be only street language and this reflects the quality of a person and his education.

Mr. Sathish, History never Lies, U dont hve to beat with Chiddu's patch up work. Let us Analyse. If u are smart enough in economy tell me what was the GDP when NDA handed over the govt to UPA ? What was the Inflation, what was the Dollar rate, what was the Gold rate, what was the Petrol Diesel and Gas rate, and Unemployment data of India Back then..

Well, it is not difficult to find out, but let me remind you, it is FOOLS who calculate on Average basis. NDA Started the economy with around 5.4%( coz it was Congress ruling before that), and Ended the Govt with 8.4% GDP, ( for God sake dont calculate avg. now,)The present GDP of india is 4.8%, Reversed from whr NDA left

Secondly, Inflation was @ 3.78% which is now @ 11% , I believe Dont have to tell u about Gold, Petrol, Diesel, Dollar, LPG Etc...

Further, When NDA handed over the Govt. AIR INDIA was posted a net profit of 162 CRORE rupees, Where as last year Air India posted a NET LOSS OF 7532 CRORE...

HISTORY NEVER LIES MR. Sathish, No matter what CHIDDU BARKS...

    Dear Mr. Krishnaraj Salian,

There is no need to twist the facts. I was only highlighting the series of lies being spoken by a person who is nominated as prime ministerial candidate. Why he has given the incorrect growth rates while addressing NRIs? NRIs are well informed and will not believe the series of lies this man is telling. How Modi can compare highest GDP growth in the last year of NDA (8.4%) to the lowest in UPA (4.8%) in the current fiscal? When you compare the performances of two governments it has to be average in the complete term.

There is no doubt that country is in difficult phase now but we cannot ignore the growth rate in the UPA I or first four years of UPA II. It was better than NDA in all fronts in the first 9 years.

Like your leader don’t be hyper. Use of terms like ‘fools’, ‘bark’ is not necessary when you are making your point of view. I am not here to defend any politician but do you know the qualification of Chidambaram?

Even if the lies are repeated thousand times truth will remain a truth. You may ridicule and make fun of the people because they are not fitting your ideas or ideologies but does it change the quality of a person.

We are all educated and let us avoid using street language which is reserved to be used by the uneducated politicians. Good Luck Mr. Krishnaraj Salian

Bull's Eye Satish ! You hit the nail on the head. I have always maintained that most of the 'majority' of this country do not support Modi. It is mainly the people with the Sanghi mentality who support him who are a relatively small minority. Sadly, I see plenty of it here in the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi ever since the BJP first emerged with some presence in Karnataka.

However, with this temporary Modi frenzy the BJP has begun to lose it's identity, relevance and significance. Eventually this Modi frenzy will wither away.

The Congress is a mature party. If they make mistakes they know how to admit it, acknowledge it, apologise for it and take action against it.

It is good the Congress are serious about their clean-up act. The youngsters in the party like MIlind Deora, Ajay Maken, Sachin Pilot, Jyotiraditya Scindia are all behind Rahul Gandhi and I believe they truly represent the youth of India and will take over the reins of the Congress soon. This should help to bring the Congress back to power in 2014. BJP's Feku can keep living in his fake dreams by thinking that Congress and Gandhi family bashing will win him votes and make him the PM so that he can quash all the 2002 riots cases and fake encounter cases. The only votes he will get are from people with the Sanghi mentality who are a small minority.

The words apologise etc. does not exist in Feku's dictionary. Oh I am sorry he does not need an English dictionary - kyon ke English teek se bolna aata hi nahi usko, isi liye puppy ke badle usko 'kutthe ka bachha' bolna pada.

I don't vote any convicted Netas of Congress.

    I will vote corrupt congress.
I will not vote any congress candidate who is a human killer.

Congress has dynamic young leaders and Rahul Ghandhi wanted to give preference to young generations and the old congress leaders are there as advisers.

We the citizens of India need real developments and not P.R.O's fake youtube and facebook developments.

We need one who can speak English as well as Hindi. (If he is speaking multi-languages is also well and good)

WE DON'T WANT A PERSON WHO SPEAKS GU-JANGLISH.

We the Indians don't need a person who is selling Chaai in the streets, in the parliament and in the U.N., for Prime Minister Position.

We the Indians don't need a person who has let loose constitutional laws into the hands of beggars, looters, goondas and killers.

    Jai ho Rahul Gandhiji,
    Jai ho Sonia Gandhiji,
    Jai ho Dr. Manmohan Singhiji.
    Jai ho Digvijay Singhiji.

    BJP IS IN FRACTURE.
    FOR OUR INDIA'S FUTURE.
    WE DON'T NEED A BUTCHER.
