MUMBAI, March 4: In a late night encounter on Friday, police gunned down Mohammed Khalid Omprakash Sheikh, an alleged contract killer owing allegiance to Chhota Shakeel and Fahim Machmach, near Mahanand Dairy in Goregaon (East) on the Western Express Highway.
Acting on a tip off from the Central Intelligence Unit that Sheikh and his accomplices are likely to arrive at Goregaon past midnight, a police team, led by senior inspector Dilip Patil, maintained vigil on the highway.
Police spotted Sheikh and an accomplice arriving on a motorcycle. Asked to stop, the duo, however, opened fire on the police. The cops retaliated in which Sheikh received serious injuries. The accomplice, however, managed to escape on the motorcycle.
Sheikh was rushed to the Bhagwati Hospital but was declared dead on admission. Police claim to have recovered a revolver, two empty catridges and four live catridges from the person of the deceased.
Police said Sheikh was involved in nine cases of extortion and murder and wanted by the Mulund, Andheri, Jogeshwari, Kasturba and Kurla-Dongri police.
