Mangalore, Mar 9: Satish Kumar of Shakti Bharath Vyayama Shala, Thokkottu was declared as the strong man at the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Power lifting and Karnataka State Bench press Championship held at Town Hall on Tuesday March 7.
Roopa Achar of Dr M V Shetty College of Social Work won the credit of being a strong woman of Dakshina Kannada and Balanjaneya Gymnasium, Mangalore emerged as the team champions in the men’s category, while Karnataka State Police bagged the team championship in women's category.
Under Karnataka State Bench press Championship, Farman Basha representing Power Gym, Bangalore won the best bench presser award among men, while U Sudha Prabhu from Karnataka State Police emerged the best bench presser among women.
Mangalore MLA Yogish Bhat was the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony. Speaking on the occasion said that since the government has not allocated funds for sports, NRIs and social service organisations have been requested to come forward to develop sports. The State government should reserve some funds for the development of sports, he suggested.
He praised the handicapped games and sports events being held. He lauded Hasan Asif for creating a national record at Special Olympics.
State Congress Committee member Mahabal Maria, businessman Raghunath Shet and Dakshina Kannada Power lifting Association honorary president Sadanand Shetty were present.
