Puttur, Mar 19: Narendra (21), a final year B Sc student of Vivekananda College Puttur died on Saturday in a road accident at Kallega, Puttur. In the collision between a KSRTC bus and a motor bike, the pillion rider Narendra succumbed to severe injuries.

Enraged by this accident and the death of the student, the public and students of the college got down on the roads in protest.

Hundreds of students and public blocked the highway for a period of two hours. The traffic was disrupted following which the police had to intervene.

Narendra was the son of Srihari Achar, a resident of Mysore and is related to renowned folk artiste Palthady Ramakrishna Achar. In order to complete his education, Narendra stayed in the house of Ramakrishna Achar.

On Saturday the college announced the results and Narendra had obtained first class marks. Overjoyed by this, he telephoned his parents and disclosed the good news. Narendra along with Srinidhi, son of P P Umanath of Kasargod were on their way to the market when the bike over took an auto rickshaw. The bike rammed into a speeding bus approaching from the opposite direction. Narendra, the pillion rider fell on the road and was crushed by the tyres of the bus. However, Srinidhi escaped with minor injuries.

The protesters have placed six demands before the KSRTC management which include Rs 5 lac compensation to the family of the deceased and job to any member of his family.
