Udupi, Mar 26: A year-old infant was roasted alive when a hut caught fire near Coronet Canning Company in Malpe on Sunday morning.

The victim has been identified as Priyanka, daughter of Paramesh and Parvati, of Davangere origin, who lived in a tent close to 'Swagat', the residence of Udupi MP Manorama Madhwaraj and near the Kodavoor road junction.

The couple is said to be working at Malpe port on daily wage basis. They had six children including the victim, the yongest issue. Only two children are said to have been in the hut when it caught fire suddenly.

On realizing that the hut was on fire, the elder sister reportedly came running out of it with hardly any time left to save the child. The fire service which was summoned brought the fire under control and prevented it from spreading around.

Malpe police are pursuing the case. The police sources praised the efforts of the public in responding to the mishap.
