Mangalore, Apr 1: For the first time in the last 40 years, Muslims have lost their control over the Kudroli slaughter house.  Accordingly, Rajesh Shetty, an employee in the slaughter house who is being supported by Hindu organizations has take over as the Kudroli slaughter house on Saturday April 1.

The slaughter house was taken over from the earlier.  Before the official handing over of the slaughter house, a pooja as per the Hindu rites was conducted at the slaughter.

Rajesh Shetty has taken over the slaughter for an annual tender of Rs 8 lac.  As per the law a medical officer has to be appointed at the slaughter house.  But one medical officer can permit the slaughter of only 96 cattle per day.  If more cattle have to be slaughtered, then the contractor has to request the city corporation to appoint one more medical officer.

Right now there is only one medical officer.  But the big question is whether the slaughter of 96 cattle can cater the need of beef eaters of the entire district?  The beef vendor has to pay Rs 113 each for each cattle to the contractor.  If 96 cattle are slaughtered, the contractor earns Rs 10, 848.  Accordingly for the whole year he will earn Rs 39, 04,580.  But he has to pay only Rs 8 lac to MCC. Even after all other expenses are met, the contractor can earn good amount of profit.

So there is a talk that the Hindu organizations have taken interest to run the slaughter house keeping an eye on profit too.  Though they maintain that they want to stop cattle running and illegal slaughtering, no one can deny the profit factor as one of major reasons behind taking over the running of slaughter house.

On Saturday special security was arranged under Bunder police inspector Vinay Gaonkar around the slaughter house to avoid any unwanted incidents during the handing over of slaughter house.  However, no incidents of violence were reported.

Revenue officer Mallayya, deputy health inspector Padmanabh, corporator Naveen D'Souza, Bajrang Dal leaders Sudarshan, Gopal Kuttar and others were present on the occasion.
