Baghdad, Nov 22 (IANS): At least 10 people were killed and 22 wounded in attacks in Iraq Friday, police said.

A roadside bomb killed three people and wounded six in the Madain area, 20 km south of Baghdad, a police source told Xinhua.

Three members of the pro-government Sahwa militia were killed and three others wounded when a roadside bomb targeted their car in Tarmiya, 30 km north of Baghdad, he added.

The Sahwa militia, also known as the Awakening Council or the Sons of Iraq, consists of armed groups, including some former anti-US Sunni insurgent groups, who turned their rifles against the Al Qaeda network after its leaders became dismayed by Al Qaeda's brutality and religious zealotry in the country.

In Iraq's capital Baghdad, four people were killed and 13 wounded in four separate attacks, the police said.

One worshipper was killed and nine wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near a Sunni mosque in the Saidiya area southwest of Baghdad while a doctor was killed when a stick bomb struck his car in the Adhamiya district north of Baghdad.

An unidentified gunman assassinated a police officer in front of his home in the Amiriya district west of Baghdad, the source said, adding that one worshipper was killed and four wounded when a bomb exploded near a Sunni mosque in the Abu Ghraib area of Baghdad.

Iraq is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in recent years. According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, almost 7,000 Iraqis were killed and over 16,000 injured from January to October this year.
