Mangalore, Apr 19: After a three-month campaign to emphasize the importance of voluntary tax compliance, which ended on March 31, Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) plans to bring tax evaders to book in accordance with the provisions under Karnataka Municipal Act 1976.

During the campaign, it was found that out of 1.37 lac owners of registered properties, 94,163 paid taxes on time. The rest will be penalized. Habitual defaulters will be dealt stringent penalties, while first time defaulters will be charged with small interest, said MCC commissioner Chandrappa.

An advertisement was put up by MCC in a leading daily to warn defaulters, as a first step towards implementing severe measures.
