Mumbai, Apr 22: Pravin Mahajan, who shot at his elder brother and BJP General Secretary Pramod Mahajan, seriously injuring him, is mentally ill, his lawyer Nandkumar Rajurkar said on Saturday. Mahajan's brother Prakash expresses shock

"Pravin is mentally ill and he may have committed the alleged crime in that state of mind", Rajurkar told reporters outside the hospital, where Mahajan was admitted.

Rajurkar said he was aware about Pravin's mental condition but parried a question as to why his client had shot at Mahajan.

"I am not aware whether Pravin shot at his brother but certainly I know that Pravin is mentally ill and needs psychiatric treatment", Rajurkar said.

Asked how Pravin got the licence of revolver when he was mentally ill, Rajurkar said obviously police has scrutinised his application before issuing licence.

Mumbai: Senior BJP leader L K Advani on Saturday said best possible medical treatment was being given to Pramod Mahajan, who was shot at by his younger brother in Mumbai and hoped that he come out of the critical situation.
Breaking from his yatra in Chattisgarh, Advani flew to Mumbai and visited the Hinduja Hospital where Mahajan was being treated. Full Coverage: Attack on Pramod Mahajan

He said the health bulletin issued by the hospital was very candid and summed up the situation fully. "I have spoken to the doctors and I have met the family. I can understand their anxiety in a situation in this kind.

"We have to wait for sometime because of the massive blood loss that has taken place," he said. Advani said the condition was critical and operation was intended to close the various points from which blood was still coming out.

"Some oozing is still taking place. Doctors have indicated that IVC and pancreas have been closed," he said.

He could only say that in a situation of this kind they were satisfied with the best treatment being given. "We can only pray for him at this stage," he added.

Advani later left for Raipur to continue his ‘Bharat Suraksha Yatra’.
