Parliamentary pandemonium over Judge Ganguly case

New Delhi, Dec 13: Former Supreme Court Judge Ashok Kumar Ganguly, seems to have come under more pressure with the Members of Parliament speaking out and demanding his resignation. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj has been known to have spoken out and demanded his expedite expulsion as soon as the case had become public. Today she lashed out in Parliament yet again saying that it was ethically wrong for a person who had violated human rights to be the Chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC). She was particularly incensed that despite all that was going on and the fact that many had asked for Judge Ganguly to step down, he stubbornly refused to give in when he should have immediately acquiesced.

India's Additional Solicitor General Indira Jaising, too has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying that with Judge Ganguly's character in question, he should not be allowed to hold the post until his name had been honourably cleared of all charges. BJP Leader Sushma Swaraj was backed by the members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Trinamool Congress leader Sudip Bandopadhya seconded Swaraj's view asking for Ganguly's immediate  resignation. Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee had been reported to have written twice to the President requesting the eviction of Judge Ganguly from the WBHRC.

When approached for his views, Judge Ganguly refused to comment on the matter. He said that he had denied the allegations and had nothing more to add on the matter. The three-judge panel that had been appointed by the Supreme Court to look into the matter, had issued a statement saying that they did believe the retired judge to be guilty of the charges stated against him by a female law intern. The female law intern had written in a blog about the 'unwelcome advances' by the former Supreme Court judge whilst interning with him way back in December 2012 at a hotel in Delhi.

The panel probing the case had studied the statements of the intern, the judge and three other eye-witnesses before issuing their statement.
