All eyes on AAP after Congress' offer of support

New Delhi, Dec 14 (IANS): All eyes will be on Aam Aadmi Party Saturday after the Congress announced the support of its eight legislators to enable it to form a government despite a hung assembly in Delhi.

A day before party leader Arvind Kejriwal is set to meet Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung, the Congress announced "unconditional" support to the AAP - the second largest grouping which bagged 28 seats in the 70-member house.

Soon after the announcement, senior leaders of AAP met and discussed their response.

An AAP leader however indicated that taking support from Congress was not an option they were looking at.

"We are firm on our strategy not to take support from Congress," party leader Manish Sisodia told IANS.

Party sources said that all suggestions were being taken into account and the party will convey its formal response on the Congress' offer to Jung Saturday.

Earlier Friday, the Congress told Jung that it was ready to "unconditionally" support an AAP government to end the political logjam in Delhi.

A Congress source told IANS that all eight legislators of the party were ready to back the AAP.

The party's letter to Jung read: "Indian National Congress is willing to offer unconditional outside support to AAP if they are ready to form the government."

"We have come to know through media that after the refusal of BJP to form government in absence of adequate number, you have invited Arvind Kejriwal of AAP to form government," said the letter signed by party general secretary Shakeel Ahmed and Delhi Congress chief J.P. Agarwal.

All the eight Congress legislators Thursday met party vice president Rahul Gandhi and expressed their desire to support AAP.

The AAP finished second, just behind the Bharatiya Janata Party's 31, leaving Delhi with a hung house. The BJP Thursday said it will not form a government.

Jung invited Kejriwal to discuss government formation Saturday after the BJP declined the offer.

BJP's chief ministerial candidate Harsh Vardhan met Jung Thursday and told him that "in the absence of a clear mandate, it will be better for us that we sit in the opposition".

"As you know, we are four short of a majority. We have no alternative... We seek the forgiveness of the people for our decision," he said after his over half-an-hour-long meeting with Jung.

He said the BJP should not be held responsible if its inability to form a government leads to fresh elections because it was the circumstances which are forcing a repoll.

AAP just want to see the pulse of the people, what they say if they want to form Govt. with outside support from Congress. They more or less know, people are going to say "no", but they want people to say that.
AAP is all along with BJP and they will form a Govt. with BJP support or give BJP support to form the Govt.
Important thing is, they do not want to loose support of the people at this juncture.

    Jossey Saldanha, Mumbai,

What challenges are you talking about dude? Delhi is a small state with huge revenue. It is not difficult to provide 50 percent electricity and 50 percent water free of cost for Kejriwal.

I think people will still accept him if he does not give anything free of cost. Because most of the people are ready to pay the actual cost for water/electricity. What people want is 24 hours electricity, enough water, good roads, shelter for homeless, employment, security for women, education for poor and overall corruption free govt etc etc.

Anything given for free will be misused in India.

So friend, please stop posing challenges to Kejriwal. From last one week, it has become routine to you, after the toilet issue. Please stop that.

PEOPLE DON'T WANT ANYTHING FREE, BUT WANTS GOVERNANCE TO BE CORRUPTION FREE.

Cong Support to AAP may be like 'Bear Hug '.
The bear may hug you with love, but the person who is hugged gets suffocated and dies by bear hug.

Once you have contested the election you need to adjust yourself to the mandate. If you have not voted with majority ,you have to find the viability to form the government by getting support from other parties who are willing to support you by evading the fresh election.Hope the new party will act accordingly and form the government with the support of congress party. All the best.Thanq.

Kejriwal is an off shoot of Anna Hazare's anti corruption movement and ambitious of political power which his Guru opposed.Incidentally Kejrowal's troup is basically not politicians or have experience. They are simple citizens from social activists, professionals who are yet to be in Indian dirty political game.Even if AAP is successful in forming govt in Delhi with Congress support,it should be seen as a Congress game plan by Rahul to reestablish party's lost image and gain confidence of people. There is also a long range stretegy by Congress party to demolish AAP image as AAP is not having political experience to manage Governnce.Shouting in opposition and managing govt is entirely two different things. If AAP get Congress support, becomes a scape goat soon.BJP too is playing brilliently in this whole drama.

Congress offering support means, AAP Can't go after the congress royal family. Congress can harass AAP if it pusues all the cases of DLF and the son in law of Sonia in Delhi. That's quiet unacceptable in a anti corruption goal. I think AAP is right in rejecting congress and BJP support. It will seriously hinder its fight against corruption when targets belong to the party who are supporting it. There is no such thing as un-conditional support here!

You are right 101% right maybe one day Congress will pull the support then what will happen? Better to have re-election coz now people know whom to be voted, people who voted to BJP and Congress will also vote AAP. Believe it or not AAP will get more than the required vote.

Taking unconditional outside support from Congress will enable AAP to form its first Govt!
However it may dilute AAP principles to a certain extent, especially if AAP govt have to take action against the wrong doings of previous Congress Govt!
Some compromise is necessary for any party.
BJP & Anna Hazare, V.K. Singh has already come together to target its one time ally AAP.
    Congress anyway is losing.
But gain of AAP would be loss sure to BJP, Anna Hazareji seems sensing that!

Yes, indeed, Arvind Kejriwal is intelligent. He is a product of IIT, a Magsaysay award winner, campaignor of RTI and was in IRS.

But, a diamond can be cut by diamond only. Likewise, only a crook can control a crook.

With his manifesto of 50% tariff cut in power and the quantity of water that was promised, it will be humanly not possible to provide to a mushrooming population of Delhi, within the next 4-5 months, since AAP is aspiring for the Lok Sabha election. Damocles sword will be hanging over his head, because both Congress and BJP are thirsty of AAP blood. Congress will ditch them in appropriate time. The unruly BPJ will not allow him to function in the assembly.

Both, Congress and BJP have ditched the alliance partners in the past and the history will repeat itself.

I hope sane counsel will prevail in this circumstance

It is utter foolishness to form the govt with Congress support. I hope they will not do that. If they take their support (like typical friends !) and form govt how will they expose Congress misdeeds in the rest of the country to win LS polls ? No way. If they do that, then what is the difference between AAP and other parties ? How can you even think of such a possibility?

Don’t think of just Delhi. You cant do nothing there even if you form Govt. with the support of Cong. Think of the whole country. I am expecting you to get at least 100 seats in the entire country, then there will be fun.

AAP should not support either Congress or BJP as they had fought against corruption against both the parties. A better option would be to form the government without taking support from the congress, as congress is the most corrupt party in the world.
The other option would be going for reelection and proving AAP is better rather than joining hands with corrupt congress. Also to keep in mind about the Lok Sabha election in 2014.

I do not think AAP can take the support from Congress as AAP had fought both BJP and Congress on corruption. If BJP who had more seats, can refuse the offer to form the government, AAP has every right to refuse to form it, since their government with the outside support will not be stable. Anyway, Arvind Kejriwal is intelligent enough to take right decision.
