UPA has done more to check corruption: PM

New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS): The UPA could not eliminate corruption but has done more than anyone else to bring in transparency in government work, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Wednesday.

"We have not eliminated corruption. But the fact is that we have done more than any earlier government in bringing transparency and accountability in the work of public authorities," Manmohan Singh told Congress MPs in parliament.

He said "there have been allegations of wrongdoing in the allocation of coal and telecom spectrum" but added that "there can be no scams in these areas in future as both are being allocated through auction now".

He said the Congress rout in elections in four states called for introspection but it should not lead to "despair" ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

"I feel that the record of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in the past nine and half years needs to be projected more effectively among people," Manmohan Singh said.

He said though the "worry about inflation" was legitimate, "we should recognise that incomes of most people have increased faster than inflation".
