Earnings rise in Sabarimala temple

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 26 (IANS): Earnings at the famed Sabarimala temple in Kerala has shown a sharp increase.

According to the Devasom Board, which manages the famed temple, the total earnings in the present season has touched Rs.127 crore, up from Rs.106 crore during the same period in the previous year.

Situated on the Western Ghats mountain range at 914 metres above sea level, the Sabarimala temple is located four kilometres uphill from Pamba in Pathanamthitta district, around 100 km from here.

The trek for pilgrims from the base camp is through dense forests.

The earnings are accounted by way of sales of various goods, offerings received at the temple and the room rents collected from devotees who stay in the temple premises.

The two-month-long festival season opened Nov 16. As is customary, the temple closes Thursday for some days and will reopen Dec 30. It will finally close Jan 14.
