Bangui, Jan 10 (IANS): The president and prime minister of the Central African Republic (CAR) have resigned over violence that has killed more than 1,000 people in the country, the Sky News reported Friday.

Interim President Michel Djotodia agreed to step down alongside his prime minister Nicolas Tiengaye at a regional summit aimed at ending violence, which according to a UN estimate has displaced nearly one million people.

CAR's entire transitional assembly is attending the summit in Chad.

Thousands of protestors in the CAR capital Bangui took to the streets Friday, calling for Djotodia to resign. He was due to step down in a year's time.

CAR has been thrown into turmoil since Seleka rebels launched attacks a year ago and forced President Francois Bozize to flee in March 2013. A transitional government has since been entrusted with restoring peace and paving the way for democratic elections. But armed clashes have erupted again.

Last month, Christians and Muslims launched reprisal attacks against each other in and around Bangui, worsening humanitarian situations.
