Despite Kejriwal refusal, UP to give 'Z' security

Lucknow, Jan 11 (IANS): The Uttar Pradesh government Saturday said that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who lives in Ghaziabad, will get 'Z' category security despite his refusal to accept security.

A home department official said a committee comprising of Principal Secretary (Home) A.K. Gupta and Director General of Police Rizvan Ahmad Thursday okayed the new security set up for the chief minister who lives with his family in a flat in Kaushambi township close to Delhi.

"The Delhi chief minister may have refused security cover but the UP Police is duty bound to provide him security that has been decided by the state government based on the threat perception," Additional Director General of Police O.P. Singh said.

The Uttar Pradesh Police has informed Delhi Police of the decision, and necessary instructions have been issued to police in Ghaziabad district.

Under the 'Z' category, Kejriwal is entitled to round-the-clock security by three sub-inspectors, seven head constables, 10 constables and two drivers.

The Local Intelligence Unit of the Uttar Pradesh Police at Ghaziabad has been asked to be on vigil, especially after an attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) office Wednesday.

Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said Friday that Kejriwal, who became chief minister Dec 28 at the head of a minority AAP government, was being given security despite his (Kejriwal's) opposition.
