Raushan Ershad becomes opposition leader in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Jan 11 (IANS): Raushan Ershad, a senior member of the Jatiya Party and wife of former Bangladesh president H.M. Ershad, was Saturday declared the leader of the opposition in the country's 10th parliament.

A gazette naming her as the leader of the opposition was published by the parliament secretariat, Bhim Charan Roy, additional secretary of the secretariat, told bdnews24.com.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury recognised Raushan, who replaced Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia as the new leader of the opposition.

Members of Jatiya Party elected Raushan as their leader in parliament at a meeting after they took oath as members of parliament Thursday.

The Jatiya Party has emerged as the second biggest party with 33 seats after the BNP boycotted the Jan 5 parliamentary elections.
