Mangalore: Bus rams into bike in heart of city - Doctor killed

Mangalore, Jan 13: An accident in a the heart of the city on Monday January 13 claimed the life of a young doctor.

The deceased is said to have been identified as Dr Gajanan Sridhar Bhat (29), a resident of Pinto Lane, Karangalpady. He was the son of Sridhar Bhat.

He was riding from Dr Ambekar circle at Balmatta towards Kankandy, when a private bus (KA 19 C 3877), plying in the same direction towards Vittal from the city, rammed into him in a bid to overtake.

Dr Bhat fell under the bus and was killed on the spot.

Traffic was chocked for sometime following the accident.

Kadri traffic police arrived at the spot and cleared the jam.

Dr Gajanan Bhat was a cardiologist at Colaco Hospital, sources said.

    When will these trucks and bus drivers learn their lessons. I have lost my elder brother DR.HARSHAVARDHAN ULLAL in a hit and run case on 19-JULY-2013 at the Pollali dhwara road and no support from the Police department or the government.If no action can be taken then such recklessness will just continue.May god give strength and courage to his family as I and my family have gone through the same.

    May his soul rest in peace.Unfair to blame heavy vehicle when these roads are occupied by two wheelers. I have visited many countries, but never seen such kind of road sharing. It makes difficult for the big vehicle to cut down its speed when the two wheeler while occupying the full road.Road structure and traffic regulation needs improving in Mangalore. Separate track for two wheelers would be best solution.

    Very horrible accident, lost the life of a young doctor. How to stop these type of irresponsible driving habits? Simple answer: Enact " Motor Vehicle Injury Law Liability Act". Then those who cause bodily injury would be criminally liable for injury and civil liability for damages. Once such law is enacted, drivers and owners of vehicles become more responsible and only drive with care to protect people, pedestrians, and property. Until this type of liability law is implemented, we do not see stopping of irresponsible driving habits. Such law shall apply to pedestrians as well, so that they too take actions to protect themselves from these irresponsible drivers, unlawful speeding, overtaking, and road rage. Life is priceless. Irresponsibility shall not be tolerated in the civilized society. May God bless this young man's soul.

    Unfortunate accident taking the life of young,budding doctor because of negligence on the part of the bus driver.Still, we don't know why these accidents are increasing in spite of so many shocks we had already come across.RTO and the Police department to look into it and take corrective measures immediately.We pray the doctor's soul be in peace eternally and strength to the parents and the relative strength to withstand this great loss.Thanq..

    It is easy for all of us to only post comments over the article. It is about time that we make it a people's movement. Bus drivers And private bus mafia knows that they can do something like this and get away with it and this is not the first time. Because we let them. The people of Mangalore are very educated and have the right conscience. However, we never take initiative. I don't remember the last time we took to the streets to make Mangalore a better place. Please don't wait for the police or policy makers to do something. This is the time and we must act now. While I am contemplating of a date 18-01-2014 for a protest. Mangalorean bus drivers have become a menace on the roads, and this is not the first time that an innocent has lost a life due to negligence and rash driving on the part of bus drivers. And yes, we should hold a protest against the bus mafia to ensure the safety of pedestrians and all traffic at large. I am in support of your thought of staging a protest. Come up with the time and venue. And let's take it forward.

    Very sad incident,
    The difference between govt and pvt Bus drivers is govt bus drivers are well trained passed minimum qualification tests, but in pvt anybody can become a driver and most of the drivers are auto rickshaw fellows who driving recklessly on the city road, they just bribe the rto and get driving license.
    Police dept must watch them their driving and strick actions must initiate without any hesitation or fear from anyone.

    Mr. Uday you are 100% correct. But here there is no aam aadmi govt., now the govt of corrupt people. RTO please stop these private buses and start the Govt bus services. There has been many accidents and deaths caused by the reckless driving of the private buses. There are more benefits from Govt bus services.


    *More revenue can be generated by the Govt
    *Bus stops will be built (As of now there are no proper bus stop in a few places for Eg: Near Kankanady to State Bank via Falnir)
    *Not only students, even employees can get monthly bus passes.
    *No need to worry about Bus strike. (Especially in private bus strike)
    * No hike of bus fare many times. Bus services are not run under the guidance of OIPEC to increase the bus fare whenever there is a hike in Diesel price.
    * Let the revenue go to the govt and thereby to the public. But it is so sad that our RTO & DC are not bothered about the government revenue and to provide better facilities to the public though they are living by public money.

    Shocked at the horrific accident. Tragic and definitely avoidable if only these killer bus drivers are given a good treatment. How many lives have they taken by their rash driving. They think since the size of the vehicle is big they own the road and expect us to move to the corner of the road as soon as they honk or else they keep honking continuously in an irritating manner. Who will lead an attack on these drivers and their owners who only want the money. Wake up Mangalore especially those who have plenty of time to attack young boys and girls and religious places and organize demonstrations for political mileage. Rise to the occasion I say.

    Mangalore roads are overcrowded with people, vehicles and sometimes with animals. You can not enlarge them sideways as there are apartments, commercial buildings and so on. I wish some of the government offices and hospitals and good colleges move out of the city so that people less travel inside the city.
    Secondly, all bus drivers should have a minimum education of 12th STD.

    One cannot predict when these men made machines like four, three and two wheelers give way. Sometimes it is drunken driving which leads to accidents. Like pedestrian path, it is worth providing a two wheeler path in a busy city like Mangalore to avoid collision of big vehicles with very small leading to death of the small vehicle rider. Let this at least be an eye opener to the administration to avoid such incidents further. One Cardiologist who gave life to many ailing is lost for Mangalore. May his soul rest in eternal peace. May his parents and family have the courage to face this sad incidence.

    So many two wheeler accidents and so many young lives lost. Many of these could have been prevented.

    1.Overtaking should only allowed in a two lane road.

    Make it a punishable offense to overtake a two wheeler unless the two wheeler is on a separate lane.

    2. Do not allow over passing a two wheeler in a single lane road.
    Make it Illegal for a two wheeler and a bus to ride on the same lane.

    Although this could be a money making opportunity for the enforcement , It will deter these accident prone actions by the buses.

    Drivers will either follow the law Or pay strict fines/jail time OR at the least, reluctant to bribe for violation.

    u come to india anywhere , watch the traffic. Watch these 2 / 3 wheelers zigzag their way on the roads ( no need of any highway).
    That is not a maniac there in the bus. how do u drive amongst these stupid 2/3 wheelers ? Judge yourself before judge others.

    Rules and educations need to be modified. All drivers need some sort of education and rules need to be modified. If any drivers get speeding ticket more than three times in a calender year put him in jail for six months and cancel his license for five years.

RIP...History repeat... :( We can recollect the similar news published by Daijiworld dated May 28, 2013 under the headlines "Udupi: 23-year-old Dr Chethan D Rai dies in Kundapur accident"...Driver's mistakes will not just make end of life of young chaps, it's the end of the world to her parents. I completely support Dr Shetty, if he is considering legal actions on drivers about following rules and also with RTO policy.

    Why no protest or candle march for this doctor,why we just overlook such incidents as if we are not at all concerned until it happens to ourselves or to our dear-ones, it just shows our selfish approach.not only the drivers, but the conductors and cleaners pressurize the passengers (bega jeppule)once their stop comes ,concerned officials should conduct surprise visits of such unruly behaviors of these people or else they will just continue to go on as if they have the license to kill.

    This is totally unacceptable. Why are we silent!!!The bus drivers are the worst of the lot. Their only motto is to speed. They dont care about lives. They keep honking continuously and drive you off the road. The traffic is a mess in Mangalore. The police do their bit, but are mostly standing in some corner and watching. Sometimes one finds lay people doing the police duty. Buses start honking from balmatta and continue till kankanady irrespective of the time, whether its day or night,traffic or no traffic, they are only racing. There have been soo many accidents and soo many lives lost - nobody cares. Its high time the RTO and the traffic department wakes up. The RTO had mentioned that 5 traffic signals would come up in Mangalore six months back. Nothing so far. No one gives way to the other. All the vehicles are parked on the roadside, in spite of the roads beings narrow. The bus should have been smashed cos there is no law here to punish anyone. MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE.

    Another reckless driving by our "City Buses" and another life lost..

    To one such accident months ago, I had given my comments regarding the recklessness of our "City Buses".

    I am again repeating the same and hope that the Mangalore RTO comes up with some stringent rules on these busses.. -

    1) Mangalore “City buses” take their own sweet time to travel from one spot to another, when no other “City bus” is behind. But the moment another “City bus” is spotted behind, Mangalore city roads become Formula 1 race track.

    2) For most of the drivers of Mangalore “City bus”, whenever / wherever a passenger says ‘stop’, there is a bus stop. This could even be in the middle of the road!!!!

    3) To make up on the lost time while travelling, most of the Mangalore “City bus” drivers have the liberty to go off route!!!

    4) Almost all the road signs / speed breakers, etc. are invisible to most of the drivers of Mangalore “City bus”. Specially at the roundabouts or traffic islands. Also, most of the “City bus” drivers expect other vehicle drivers (who adhere to traffic rules) ignore the rules too.

    And there are many instances / cases about the Mangalore “City buses”, which unfortunately could not comment within 2000 characters.

    Therefore, I feel, it is high time to scrap the privatization of Mangalore “City buses” and introduce the government city buses on all routes. Or else God save passengers, pedestrians and other vehicle drivers.

    1.Heavy traffic through out the day
    2.No systematic traffic control
    3.Narrow roads in between unscientic road devider.
    4.no speed governor equipped in pvt. buses,
    5.Drunk & drive even in day time.
    6.Lazy traffic police.
    7.Stops giving by bus at their discretion,& without indicator.
    8.Horrible traffic during peak hour
    9.Totally uncontrolled traffic rules.

    Another life lost unnecessarily. I am just back from Mangalore, and must say that driving is a real nightmare in Mangalore. Everyone wants to drive or ride at the center of the road, some drive as if they are on a race track and others drive as if they have all the time in the world and don't bother to move to either the right or the left to give way. Buses and trucks race on the right ( fast) track without a care in the world. At crossings, junctions and circles it is always MIGHT IS RIGHT and nobody cares to give way or drive on one track. A driver will simply enter the main road without first bothering to see if there is any incoming traffic on the main road. If anyone wants to descend into chaos, then Mangalore is the place. Not difficult to understand then as to why we have so many fatalities on our roads.

    When will the Mangalore bus drivers be taken to task for their rash driving. They have become like rowdies. All that they are bothered is their day to day collection. Had a bad experience this time, when in Mlore, a car guy (from whom I could smell alcohol when I faced him) backed up his car into my car and I stopped him from getting away. However, since I blocked the road for a passing bus, the bus conductor and driver literally pushed me back into my car saying nothing has happened. Had to let it go as I did not want to create a scene.

    Very sorry to read such a tragic news. My hearty sympathies to the bereaved family members.

    Such accidents should be dealt under section of murder so that in future, such accidents can be avoided. This is only greed for an extra few bucks. These city buses ply (at an exorbitant speed) as they wish, stop anywhere as long as they want, though there is a time table (only for the name's sake) to be followed. If anyone questions them, he is abused and many a time both the conductor as well as driver join hands in the tussle. During this time our dear public just observes as a drama. As far as I have seen no member (very rare) helps the commuter in trouble. It is high time we awaken ourselves to save our dear and near ones.

    Very sad. After studying Cardilogist with so much hard work, this doctor could not render his valuable service due to the dragon act of the bus driver, who has taken this doctor's life.

    But the driver has to be booked under murder because he has overtaken the other bus and killed the bike rider. Really very sad.

    At this very young age, poor doctor lost his life.

    Very tragic news! our R.T.O should be held responsible for this because our private buses are over speeding.They are least bothered about the people also the police they also allow them to do rash driving. Nobody follows the rules and due to this innocent people are losing their lives.

    The Drivers of the Private Buses of Mangalore always think that they are the Kings of the Road and they never care for Two wheeler Riders and Pedestrians. Govt Buses should be introduced all over DK-Udupi including City Buses.

    Where is the police. Where are the laws.every bus driver gets away like this . I have lost two friends because of these maniac overspeeding bus drivers. Can anyone put a speed limit on them . Recklessly driving honking and just beating time I the bargain killing people and ramming into things . Obviously they are driving a big bus so wat do they lose.there is only god who can punish them.pathetic.and such incidents wil keep happening . Where is the security for a bike rider.they drive as though they are in a race.

    Very sad to see & hear these type of accident. I request the department of Police & RTO kindly take action on rash & unruly Drivers. Don't give a license in the future. But very sad to see a within a couple of days they are driving buses in our city. Yes Joseph..the auto-rickshaw drivers without signal immediately they take the auto left or right side. some auto drivers giving right signal and taking left turn. So I am advising to you all don't drive behind the auto. Accident only because of our dirty road & unruly rash drivers! Police only watching helmet & tint...! they should be punished (put fine)these type of driver also!

    One more innocent life lost. What is surprising is that the maniac driver is still in his seat, If this accident, incident was in Mumbai, by now his bus would have been destroyed and the driver would have gone up with Dr Gajanan Sridhar Bhat, Mangalore bystanders like only Tamasha...

    We keep reading such news practically every day, and have started to become numb to such tragedies. The fact is that there is nothing more that is being done to stop such deaths on the road. The drivers are still speeding recklessly, and the police is still not doing anything. The best the police does is to wait for an accident to take place and then take some action - probably. My question is why is the police not effectively controlling this menace. What are they doing

    As a safe two wheeler rider i too have faced hardships in riding on city roads with the rude buses chasing us like thief's. They keep on horning loudly, forcing us to move v fast forward, which can get fatal to a two wheeler rider.Will the Traffic police/RTO look into this ?

    Very sad and heart rending incident/accident.
    Over speeding & overtaking to fetch more passengers and in the bargain valuable human life is taken away.
    Right action should be taken on this driver.
    Heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family members.
    God grant courage and strength to the bereaved family to bear the terrible loss of their beloved fly member.
    May the departed Soul rest in Heavenly Abode.

    None come forward to reign in these unruly drivers. It is but a licensed murder. The family of the deceased has to bear all the loss. May the Almighty give them strength to bear the pain , frustration and agony.

    Driving a vehicle in Mangalore has become very bad. The bike riders are driving very dangerously, precariously/driving helter-skelter from the left as well as from the right just throwing the traffic rules in the wind.

    The bike riders and auto-rickshaws are very bad to the city.

    The city bus drivers are not stopping by the very side of the bus-stop instead on the middle of the road causing traffic jam behind bus.
