Bangalore, May 13: Heavy rains that lashed the city during the past three days have left two persons dead and ten injured.
Hundreds of trees have reportedly been uprooted. Rainfall on Friday is said to be the highest for a day in 20 years. The record of a day in May 20 years ago was 50 mm. But on Friday, May 12, 2006 the rainfall was 85 mm.
Murugesh (29) of Tamil Nadu origin died when a tree fell on him in JC Nagar. Another young man, whose name is not available, also died of tree fall over him. Both died when they sought protection from the rain under the tree.
On Friday afternoon, the sun was very bright and harsh. But by 4 pm there was a sudden cloudburst and it rained nonstop for three hours.
Corporation employees and fire brigade had a busy time in clearing the uprooted trees.
About 50 electric poles have reportedly fallen flat, resulting in power shutdown in several areas.
Many low-lying areas are still inundated by stagnant water. Residents from such areas have been evacuated to safer places.
