NHRC issues notice to UP Police director general

New Delhi, Jan 16 (IANS): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Thursday issued notice to the director general of Uttar Pradesh Police over Monday's physical assault on some women protestors by policemen in Firozabad.

Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report that some police personnel were found kicking, slapping and lathi-charging women protestors, the commission has sought a reply from the police chief within two weeks.

"The commission has observed that the contents of the report, if true, amount to serious violation of the dignity of women and their human rights," said the NHRC.

The women and others were protesting the death of two persons in a road accident, it added.
