Sonia attacks BJP, says its divisive ideology biggest threat

New Delhi, Jan 17 (PTI): Signalling that Congress is ready for the battle ahead in the Lok Sabha elections,  party President Sonia Gandhi today attacked the BJP saying its "divisive" ideology is the "biggest threat" while it puts up a "pretence" of moderation.

Facing BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi as the main opponent, she said secularism was a matter of deep faith for the Congress and not a matter of political compulsion.

In 20-minute speech, she also touched on the issue of corruption, a major issue stalking the UPA II government, appealing to parties to rise above political considerations to ensure passage of anti-corruption measures pending in Parliament.

"The biggest threat before the country is from communal forces and ideologies. Congress stands for uniting the people...but what is the approach of our main political opponent? I will tell you. You know it yourself.

"It is to divide the society on communal lines and spread hatred in the name of unity to impose a single identity. They hide their real face behind the mask of moderate pretensions. They criticise our leaders and level false allegations against them and they go to the extent of spreading violence. How can such an ideology be tolerated," Gandhi  said addressing the day-long AICC session here without naming BJP.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi, senior cabinet ministers and party leaders from all over the country heard her in rapt attention as she spoke of the successes of the UPA coalition.

She said the Congress workers should be proud that the party never compromised on its idelogy. "For Congress, secularism is not a political compulsion but a matter of deep faith," she said.

Gandhi said as the Lok Sabha elections near, the party needs to send a "clear signal" that Congress is ready and prepared for the battle ahead.

"The Congress has faced many difficult times in the past, much tougher than today.  But we have never lost heart. We have repeatedly demonstrated our resilience by remaining committed to our vision, to our values and the beliefs that have sustained us," she said.

"In our long journey, we have seen many ups and downs. We have witnessed victories and faced defeats which are inescapable in politics. But we have kept ourselves vibrant," Gandhi said.

And in these changing circumstances, she said, the Congress has to move forward in a gallant way.  And in this, the party will be helped by its fighting spirit.

She said the electoral contest will witness a "sharpening combat" between competing ideologies, between competing interpretations of the past and between clashing visions of future.

"It will be a battle for India as was conceived by our founding fathers and as we cherish. It will be a battle for our age-old secular traditions," she said.

Referring to the issue of corruption, Gandhi said the UPA government has laid out a five-point agenda to fight graft.

She appealed to political parties to rise above political considerations to help get the various anti- corruption bills pending in Parliament passed when the Winter session resumes on February 5.

    Mr. Dinesh Poojary,
Very true.Once again the logic applies here. One who commits murder with nonsense hatred comments feels everybody does the same (guilt). There existed certain people earlier too who used to pass such comments. But they have disappeared from the scene. To close the chapter, just go through all the comments written by both of us on this topic.Readers have already given their views and you will get the result. Now the topic is becoming stale and I dont think anybody will read this topic further.

i voted for congress in 2013 and guess what things are the same way they were during the BJP rule, roads are not yet paves, bribe collection has only gone up and in spite of repeatedly begging the civic authorities to ask more proactively all that i got was "pay up or shut up".I guess democracy is just an illusion we Indians have to live with I had some hope in kejriwal but just see the anarchy in Delhi now, people regret casting their vote for AAP,i say bring army dictatorship and shoot all the deshdrohis hiding in this country as i see no other solution to the predicament we are in presently.

Rahul's thunderous speech today made Modi look like a novice orator. Today Rahul did not look like a reluctant politician. He looked hungry to win. He looked combative, aggressive and extremely energetic. He spoke with passion. He spoke honestly. He spoke from the heart. He spoke like a leader who genuinely cares for every individual citizen of this country. If he carries on in this manner he will certainly give the Congress renewed vigor and confidence to battle and win the LS polls 2014. I wish him well. I hope he weeds out all corrupt members from the Congress and injects young, honest and sincere members in the Congress. The Congress's ideology is needed for this nation, not their corruption. Rahul and his band of young leaders give us hope.

The 'new' Rahul led corruption free Congress and/or parties like the AAP should and must keep Communal divisive forces of this country out of power at any cost.

Those referring to him as a buffoon / cocaine addict will very soon appear like buffoons and cocaine addicts themselves.

If any of the readers and commentators believe in our constitution, then they should not worry about BJP or Congress. The Indian Constitution is supreme and therefore whoever rules the nation they must rule according to the constitution. Congress was given enough time to rule, let there be change now. Let us allow BJP to rule. After all it is only a 5 year term.

One of the impressive speeches by Rahul Gandhi. This is the fitting reply to sarcastic speeches by the Prime Minister nominee. His speech is completely different from his opponents and stressed mainly on achievements and future plans.

He told Congress, is a “philosophy” and nobody can remove such philosophy of India. This is true and whoever thinking to make India minus Congress will cease to exist one day.

There was energy, sincerity and vision in his speech and he should move ahead without any fear. The quality of the speech comes from the background of a person and we could sea of difference in Rahul’s speech versus Prime Minister nominee.

This speech will make Sangh supporters very uncomfortable and frustrated as they know that only Gandhi family is a hindrance for them to march towards power.

Now we can expect frustrating abusive comments by Sangh supporters here against Rahul.
