Modi can never become PM, can sell tea: Aiyar

New Delhi, Jan 17 (PTI): In remarks that are likely to stoke a controversy, Congress leader Manishankar Aiyar today mocked Narendra Modi's Prime Ministerial ambitions and said a place will be identified for the Gujarat Chief Minister to distribute tea here.

"I promise you in 21st Century Narendra Modi will never become the Prime Minister of the country. ...But if he wants to distribute tea here, we will find a place for him," Aiyar said at the venue of the AICC meeting here.

Aiyar's remarks comes against the backdrop of Modi's reference to his own socio-economic background and humble origins at rallies while targeting the Gandhi-Nehru family.

Modi has said that people who are ruling at the Centre "don't know what poverty is all about, but I know it."

The Gujarat Chief Minister has said that he was born in a poor family, and have seen and lived in poverty.

"I have sold tea at the railway station and in running trains ...those selling tea in trains know more about railways than the minister," Modi had said at a rally in Patna.

When he was six years old, Modi helped his father sell tea to passengers whenever an odd train came into the small Vadnagar station in Gujarat, according to a book titled "The anatomy of Narendra Modi--the man and his politics" authored by Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay.

Earlier Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal had also made similar remarks against Modi, saying that a person who used to sell tea cannot have a national perspective.

"Narendra Modi wants to become a PM. Someone rising from a tea shop can never have a national perspective. Like, if you make a 'sipahi' (constable) as 'kaptan' (Superintendent of Police), he can never have SP's approach but will have that of a constable," Agarwal had said in Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh.

Now Modi is no longer a tea vendor, but a successful chief minister.Hence people should be careful while commenting on his caliber.People of Gujrat are not fools to elect him consecutively three times.

Because of this mentality we will remain third world country even though world's top class brains we produce we can not become number 1 or 2 or 3 or we can not beat Pakistan and China. One day Bangladesh & Sri Lanka may be better in democracy than India. God save us from such kind of ministers. Aiyar Cant sell tea, but he can sell the Nation itself like all Cong people. This is what Rahul Gandhi meant in Bengaluru when he was talking about 'Marketing the Party' ( albeit - selling the Nation).

Actually, the Congis have realized their days are numbered and so simply blabbering.. I used to be a strong supporter of Cong but after the MMS debacle at the center (how can anyone accept that mute, subservient man to be a leader? Just mind boggling...). Serving tea to passengers is better than cheating the passenger.

We don't know what mr. Aiyar was doing,as of now it has become the routine to sling mud at each other. We waste our Sense with such nonsense, rather than having a healthy debate which makes sense, for a progressive India.

You are talking of Healthy Debate? But Congress is not having a single person who is ready for healthy debate with Modi, because none of the Cong people know the ground realities of India. All are born with Golden Spoon or at least Silver spoon in their mouth.
They have forgotten that their own Lal Bahadur Shastri comes from a very very humble background.

    Mr. Rani S Shenava,
Please listen to Modi's speech.. He only speaks against Gandhi Family, Congress, etc... always making sarcastic remarks or personal attacks. So where is the healthy debate. BJP ruled for 5 years under vajpayee which took our country 20 years behind.(kargil, kafan chor, took out all subsidies etc...). In 67 years BJP ruled only 5years. leave the job of running the country to experts... So BJP either sell tea in Gujarat or be a responsible opposition party.BJP is no less in corruption, sample seen in Karnataka...
