Karkala, May 14: It’s a tunnel… Think it’s build during the time of kings…No it’s a place used for storing agriculture produce….Never! It’s got to be leading somewhere….. Maybe to a king’s palace!
Imagination ran riot on Saturday morning as the news of a 'discovery' of a ‘historic tunnel’ spread like wildfire across Yellare village here. While work was in progress at the Mulkadu higher primary school premises, a strange looking well was discovered near the toilet pit.
The ‘tunnel’ as the locals named it is said to have a 2 ft diameter and was deep. Sheer curiosity compelled the locals to explore the ‘tunnel.’ One among them a Narayan volunteered to take the risk and enter the tunnel.
According to him, the pit was shaped like a huge pot with a narrow neck - enough for a human being to enter and later broadening itself. The inner walls were polished and were smooth.
No doubt this is an ancient structure used for storing liquids or agriculture produce, he observed ruling out the possibility of being a tunnel.
The news which spread around attracted more than 500 people who wanted to take a glimpse of the ‘tunnel’.
